Patience and persistence, that’s what Michael Idol of Archdale said helped him win a Cash 5 jackpot of $193,665.

Idol said he almost won the jackpot last year but was one number off. His luck this year changed on April 29 when he beat the odds of 1 in 575,757 to match all five numbers.

“I watched the drawing and started screaming,” Idol said. “I got my son, and woke up my wife. We just couldn’t believe it.”

Idol has been a warehouse worker for over 38 years and plans to retire next year.

He claimed the jackpot Friday. After federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $134,113. He plans to use the money to pay off his house and get a new truck.

Idol bought the $1 Quick Pick ticket at the Fairway One Stop on North Main Street in Archdale.

Ticket sales from games like Cash 5 made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how almost $53.6 million in lottery funds has made a difference in Randolph County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
