Tyrone Carethers of Winston Salem is the latest player to win $1 million after playing 10th Anniversary Millions.

Carethers stopped to get a drink at the Speedway on Lewisville Road in Clemmons and decided to buy two of the $10 tickets. He scratched the first in the store, but didn’t win. He scratched the second when he got home and couldn’t believe what he saw.

“I was in shock,” Carethers said. “I just stood there for ten minutes.”

Carethers claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum and after federal and state tax withholdings received $415,503. He plans to use the money to help with retirement and start a trust fund for his grandchildren.

10th Anniversary Millions launched in April with four top prizes of $1 million. Two top prizes remain.

Ticket sales from games like 10th Anniversary Millions made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year.
