The 4th of July holiday sparkled for Everette Shaw of Winston-Salem after he won $100,000 in that night’s Powerball drawing.

Shaw’s good luck happened when he stopped at Brewer Family Fare on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem and bought a Powerball ticket for the Independence Day drawing.

The ticket matched the numbers on the four white balls and the Powerball to win $50,000. Because he added the $1 Power Play feature, the prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier was drawn. It beat odds of one in 913,129 to win the prize.

He claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $70,502.

The next Powerball drawing is Wednesday night. The jackpot has reached $90 million, worth $54.9 million cash.

Ticket sales from games like Powerball make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million a year for education. For details on how $20.3 million in lottery funds made a difference in Forsyth County last year, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website at www.nclottery.com.
