David Parry of Angier said a set of “lucky” numbers made up of family birthdays won him Saturday’s Carolina Cash 5 jackpot of $450,233.

Parry began his usual routine Sunday morning, making coffee, reading the news on his computer, and checking his lottery numbers.

As Parry reviewed the Cash 5 winning numbers, first he saw a “9’’, for his birthday; then a “10” for his Dad’s; an “18” for Mom’s; a “20” for one of his brothers; and then a “23” for his other brother. Together, those numbers matched the winning numbers to give Parry the jackpot.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time,” Parry said. “I’m as happy as a clam.”

Parry said health issues forced him into an early retirement from his work as an apartment maintenance supervisor. He said he would use his prize money to pay some bills, do some home improvements, and then live on the rest.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. The jackpot for Tuesday’s drawing is $120,000. Odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education.
