A celebration of high fives and screaming broke out at a Dunn home when Sue Pope and her husband found out about their winning $110,000 Cash 5 ticket.

Pope won the jackpot in the Oct. 16 drawing and didn’t learn of her big win until the following day when her husband scanned their ticket and was surprised to see that it said to go to lottery headquarters.

“He came home and scanned it again in front of me,” Pope recalled. “And then we looked the numbers up and saw that we had all five of the numbers. We were high fiving and screaming and just couldn’t believe it.”

They bought their Quick Pick ticket at the Circle K on Longbranch Road in Dunn.

Pope claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $77,825.

“We have one son who’s in the process of building a home,” said Pope. “And another son that is saving to build a home. So, we want to add a little to that for them and the rest we’re just going to put it in the bank.”

Carolina Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night. Wednesday’s jackpot is $218,000.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education. For details on how $8 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Harnett County in 2019, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
