For Stanley Lawrence of Charlotte, winning a $816,451 Cash 5 jackpot means no more worries about paying for children’s college education.

“I’m relieved,” said Lawrence as he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters on Thursday.

Lawrence purchased his winning Quick Pick ticket for the Sept. 5 drawing using Online Play through the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

“I was quite shocked when I opened my email and saw it Sunday morning,” recalled Lawrence of discovering his good fortune. “I’ve been playing this game for a few years. I used to win here and there, just $5 or $10, but this is a big win for me.”

After federal and state tax withholdings, Lawrence took home $577,640.

“My kids are in high school and middle school so I’ll plan this money for their colleges,” he said. “We’re very happy.”

Carolina Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night. Thursday’s jackpot is $100,000.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through Online Play either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Ticket sales from draw games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education. For details on how lottery funds have helped all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
