Shiela Davis of Fayetteville won $100 on a $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off before, but on Monday, the $20 ticket delivered her a $100,000 prize.

“I had a feeling about this certain ticket that one day I was going to win,” she said.

Davis, a long-term care nurse, stopped at the Short Stop on Raeford Road in Fayetteville for some scratch-offs on the way back from her mom’s house. One of those was a $5,000,000 Fortune ticket and it won her a $100,000 prize.

“I didn’t see it until the last row, but then I saw the dollar sign,” recalled Davis. “At first, I was thinking it would be $20, but I saw the $100,000 and my mouth just dropped.”

She tried to share her good fortune with her friend, who was in the same room. “I was trying to tell my friend that I had won but I couldn’t really get my words out,” she said. “I was speechless.”

Davis claimed her prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Tuesday. After federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $70,756.

“It worked out really well for me,” said Davis. “I’m grateful because it came at a good time.”

Davis plans to use her winnings to pay off some bills and help her children. “Everybody’s having a hard time right now, so that will come in handy,” she said.

$5,000,000 Fortune launched in August 2019 with three top prizes of $5 million and six $100,000 prizes. One $5 million prize and three $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million per year for education. For details on how $21.8 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Cumberland County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
