Charles Whittemore of Asheville tried his luck on a Cash 5 ticket and won half of Sunday’s $825,512 Cash 5 jackpot.

Whittemore bought his lucky ticket, using a combination of his own numbers and Quick Pick numbers, from the Roadrunner Market on Sardis Road in Asheville. His ticket was one of two that matched all five numbers in the drawing, so the jackpot was split with each winner receiving $412,756.

Whittemore claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $292,025.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million per year for education. For details on how $11.1 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Buncombe County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
