Jacob Andrews of Angier tried his luck on a $20 scratch-off and instantly found himself the lucky winner of a $4 million prize.

Andrews purchased his $150 Million Cash Explosion ticket from the Circle K on U.S. 421 South in Broadway. He claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

As a winner, he had the option of taking the $4 million as an annuity of $200,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $2.4 million. He chose the $2.4 million lump sum and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $1,698,006.

The $150 Million Cash Explosion game launched in October 2018 with four top prizes of $4 million, six prizes of $1 million, and 10 $100,000 prizes. One $4 million prize, one $1 million prize, and two $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education. For details on how $62 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Wake County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
