Lorraine and Jerry Tobin of Charlotte were shocked to learn that their Cash 5 numbers won them a $1,047,527 jackpot.

“Excited, happy, thankful,” said Lorraine. Her husband, Jerry, agreed, saying, “We’re just blessed. It’s unbelievable.”

The couple purchased their winning Quick Pick ticket for Monday’s drawing from the Kangaroo Express on Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte.

“I checked my tickets at 4 o’clock this morning,” recalled Lorraine. “And that’s what I did, ‘Wow!’ I didn’t know what to do.”

The couple claimed their prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. They split the jackpot amount and each took home $370,563 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

“We plan to buy a house,” said Lorraine of their plans for the prize money. “We need one, we’ve been living in an apartment for 17 years.”

The couple also plans to buy a new car, pay off some bills, and donate to their church.

Carolina Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night. Wednesday’s jackpot is $100,000.

The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through Online Play on the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.
