Damien Malone of Durham took a chance on a $5 Fast Play ticket at a grocery store on Thursday and multiplied his cash to the tune of $141,221.

He bought his 20X The Cash ticket from the Harris Teeter on Hillsborough Road in Durham and, after seeing his win, came straight to lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Malone took home $100,282.

At the time Malone bought his ticket, the Fast Play jackpot stood at $282,442. A $5 ticket receives 50 percent of the jackpot amount. The odds of winning a Fast Play jackpot are 1 in 320,000.

The Fast Play rolling jackpot grows with every ticket purchased. On Friday afternoon, the jackpot had grown past $155,000.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $2.5 million per day for education. For details on how $13.9 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Durham County in 2021, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
