Sandra Lopez Alvarado of Burlington stopped for snacks after a Fourth of July get-together, decided to get a lottery ticket, and won $100,000.

“I wasn’t going to buy a ticket at first,” said Lopez Alvarado. “I decided I was going to go for it.”

Lopez Alvarado, a barber, bought her lucky $30 Fabulous Fortunes ticket from Deep Grocery on Rauhut Street in Burlington.

She scratched the ticket at home and was shocked by the win.

“What? I won the lottery,” recalled Lopez Alvarado of her winning moment. “It felt like ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!’”

Lopez Alvarado plans to open a barber shop with her winnings.

Lopez Alvarado arrived at lottery headquarters on Thursday to claim her prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $71,019.

Fabulous Fortune launched this month with six $3 million prizes and 18 $100,000 prizes. Five $3 million prizes and 16 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million per year for education. For details on how $9.7 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Alamance County in 2021, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
