Roosevelt Manuel III of Sylva always told people he would win big and his prediction came true when a $1 Cash 5 ticket delivered a $458,841 jackpot.

“I kept saying one of these days I’m going to win,” he said.

Manuel, 70, bought his lucky Quick Pick ticket from Catamount Pump & Go on Steeple Road in Sylva. He matched all five white balls in the Jan. 14 drawing to win the jackpot. Manuel said he watched the Cash 5 drawing live on television.

“It will probably take a couple more days to really sink in,” he said.

Manuel arrived at lottery headquarters Wednesday to collect his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $326,925.

He said he plans to use his winnings to help take care of his family.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night.

The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598. Thursday’s jackpot is $100,000.

Ticket sales from draw games such as Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise $2.5 million a day on average for education. For details on how $1.7 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Jackson County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
