Karen Lee-Nix of Archdale sat in her rocking chair watching a movie Friday night when her husband David came home and told her they won $100,000 on a scratch-off.
“I asked her to pause the movie,” he recalled. “Then I said, “We just won $100,000.”
At first, Lee-Nix didn’t believe him. But then she saw the ticket for herself.
“It brought tears to my eyes,” she recalled. “We both had tears of joy.”
Nix bought his lucky $10 Million Spectacular ticket from Zingo Express on Liberty Road in Archdale.
“I always have a positive attitude and think that somebody is going to win so it might as well be me,” he said.
The couple arrived at lottery headquarters Wednesday to claim the prize with each claiming $50,000. After required federal and state tax withholdings, each took home $35,757.
They plan to use the winnings to do some home improvements, pay some bills, and put the rest in savings.
The $10 Million Spectacular game debuted in December with five top prizes of $10 million, 20 prizes of $1 million and 20 prizes of $100,000. Three $10 million prizes, 10 $1 million prizes and nine $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
