Johnny Pearce of Zebulon went to the grocery store for a loaf of bread on Sunday but came into real dough that night when his Cash 5 ticket won a $130,000 jackpot.

“I had to check it five or six times to make sure,” he recalled.

Pearce bought his lucky $1 Quick Pick ticket from Compare Foods on North Arendell Avenue in Zebulon. The odds of matching all five balls are 1 in 962,598.

He said he told his family over and over that he would win big playing the lottery.

“I told them all the time I was going to hit the Cash 5 jackpot one day,” Pearce said.

Pearce takes care of his mom, so he shared the big news with her first.

“She was tickled,” he said.

Pearce claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $93,275.

He plans to put his winnings in the bank and possibly take a trip.

Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Tuesday’s jackpot is $110,000.
