Bram Dunehew of Concord went to fill up his gas tank on Friday but his receipt didn’t print so he went inside the store, grabbed a Powerball ticket, and walked out with a $2 million win.
“It’s crazy because I never would have even bought that ticket if the receipt printed outside,” he said.
Dunehew, a college student studying civil engineering, won his big prize in Saturday’s Halloween Powerball drawing.
“I think Halloween’s now my favorite holiday,” he laughed. “Trick or treating was fun as a kid but this is insane.”
Dunehew bought his lucky $3 ticket from Sam’s Mart on N.C. 49 in Harrisburg. He matched the numbers on all five white balls to win $1 million. Because he bought a Power Play ticket, his prize doubled to $2 million.
“It’s absolutely preposterous,” Dunehew said. “I fell over when I saw it.”
He arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to claim his winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $1,440,201.
Dunehew plans to use his winnings to buy his father a Cadillac.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot stands at an $835 million annuity or $357.9 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
