Steven Smith of Hillsborough tried his luck on a $30 scratch-off and won a $100,000 prize.

Smith bought his lucky MAX-A-MILLION ticket from A&M Mini Mart on Burlington Road in Roxboro.

He arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $72,018.

The MAX-A-MILLION game debuted in March with 25 top prizes of $1 million and 10 prizes of $100,000. Fifteen $1 million prizes and six $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Education programs in Orange County received $8.2 million in support from lottery funds last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
