Norma Knight of High Point likes to pick her own numbers playing Powerball and her strategy paid off Monday with a $100,000 win.
“I choose my numbers based on birthdays and anniversaries,” she said. “I’ve played the same numbers for years.”
Knight bought her lucky $3 ticket using Online Play. She matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000. Because she bought a Power Play ticket, her prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier hit.
“I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Knight recalled. “I yelled for my husband to come take a look at it.”
She arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to claim her winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $72,011.
“It feels amazing,” Knight said when she received her big check.
She plans to use her winnings to do some home repairs, buy her husband a tractor, and take her family on a vacation.
Saturday’s Powerball jackpot stands at a $238 million annuity or $110.9 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
Powerball is one of six draw games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.
