Kourtnie Daugherty of Pineville just bought a new home a month ago and he can already pay off his mortgage after a second chance drawing on Wednesday won him a $1 million grand prize.

“This is so crazy that I won’t have a house payment anymore,” he said. “It’s amazing.”

Daugherty won his prize in the third of four $8 Million Money Maker Second Chance drawings. There were over 1.5 million total entries in the drawing. He received a phone call after the drawing alerting him to his big win.

“I was flabbergasted,” Daugherty said recalling the phone call. “This is just surreal. I don’t know how to feel.”

When Daugherty arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to claim his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required tax withholdings, took home $432,060.

“It’s been a crazy 24 hours,” Daugherty laughed.

In addition to paying off his mortgage, Daugherty plans to use his winnings to pay for a birthday trip to Puerto Rico.

Players get a second chance with their $8 Million Money Maker scratch-offs by scanning them into their lottery accounts where they are automatically entered into the drawing. The drawing had one top prize of $1 million, three $100,000 prizes, 10 $25,000 winners and 50 winners of $500.
