Kimberly Staton of Polkton never doubted she would one day win big playing the lottery and a $30 scratch-off delivered that big win in the form of a $1 million top prize.

“I’ve always said I was going to win one of those million-dollar prizes,” Staton said. “I felt like it was for me.”

She bought her lucky MAX-A-MILLION ticket from the 7-Eleven on Unionville Indian Trail Road West in Indian Trail. After she scratched her ticket, Staton couldn’t wait to share the news of her big win.

“I told everybody I work with,” she laughed.

When Staton arrived at lottery headquarters Friday, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $432,068.

She plans to use her winnings to buy a house.

The MAX-A-MILLION game debuted in March 2025 with 25 top prizes of $1 million and 10 prizes of $100,000. Thirteen $1 million prizes and six $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

The state provided over $28 million in grants, using money raised by the lottery, to help Anson County build a new middle school. For details on other ways Anson County benefits from lottery funds, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
