For many people, a cup of coffee (or three) is what wakes them up in the morning. Well, Tuesday morning, Katie Evers said she thought she was going to have a heart attack after winning $100,000 on a scratch-off ticket her dad bought her – after all, she didn’t even know he was going to buy one. Her dad, Wilbert Parker, was buying gas at the Happy Mart in Saint Pauls and decided to buy Katie a Carolina Black ticket with his change.
And what a change it made.
Talking to us here at lottery HQ on Tuesday afternoon, Katie said she was still in shock. While her dad said he played the lottery regularly, Katie said she had only played a few times. “It feels like a dream,” she said after getting her after-tax check for $68,001. Her surprise win comes less than two weeks before her 26th birthday. Katie, who is a student living in Bladenboro, said she wants to pay off her bills, share some of her winnings with family, and maybe take a trip to her home state of Texas.
