Last Thursday, one of the luckiest players we’ve ever met claimed a $500,000 prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. We think everyone would agree that Kathy Butler of Hamlet, NC was extremely fortunate just to win half a million bucks, but believe it or not her story gets better.
You can watch a video of her telling her story here.
Exactly one month before she won $500,000 playing $500,000 Jackpot, Butler played the lottery for the first time and won $1,000 on a Cash Spectacular ticket. She won $10 the second time she played. The third time she swung and missed. But then on her fourth ticket, she hit the $500,000 home run. And on the way to claim it, she was still feeling lucky. So she and her husband Marty stopped off for a couple more Cash Spectacular tickets. She won $25 on the first and $100 on the second.
So, if you’re keeping track, that made Kathy Butler five-for-six winning on instant scratch-off games at the time of her $500,000 claim (which brings her total at the time to $501,135 in winnings). Marty Butler bought the winning “$500,000 Jackpot” ticket for his wife at the D&D Food Mart on U.S. Highway 1 in Rockingham.
Butler told us she wanted to make several purchases with her prize money, including motorcycles for her husband and son and a car for her daughter. “I might just take next week off from work,” she added. Butler also shared that she is thinking about taking the family on a Hawaiian cruise. “I’m just very happy. I’m at peace,” Butler said. “I’ve struggled all my life to pay my bills and now I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I think it’s great.”
