Friday’s NCEL 200 truck race in Concord gave two NASCAR fans the opportunity to be a part of the action and meet some of their favorite drivers. Joe Edwards of Winston-Salem and Stan Pettit of Rock Hill, S.C. were chosen as the truck race’s honorary starter and grand marshal by winning an on-site contest judged by wrestler Ric Flair, $88.1 million Powerball winner Jeff Wilson and “Lug Nut,” the speedway’s mascot.
The two men won by competing against 23 other contestants at the NCEL booth at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Each contestant had to prove their flag waving skills and their microphone prowess in front of an audience of friends, family and other race fans.
The two contest winners greeted the drivers on-stage as they were announced, including Kyle Busch, who later won the race for the second year in a row. Both Edwards and Pettit also received a set of tickets for the NCEL 200, the Sprint All-Star race, the Top Gear 300 and the Coca Cola 600.
“I just waved the green flag,” said Edwards. “I had to hold on because it felt like a hurricane up there. I feel like I’ve graduated from ‘Wooooo! University.’ It was a really amazing experience.”
“I just got to say ‘drivers start your engines’,” Pettit said. “Man it was great. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I guarantee you.”
