Temperatures have been hot the first two weeks of June – and in that time, two dozen players from across North Carolina have won big instant prizes. So far this month, players have claimed more than $23.9 million on instant games alone. People ask all the time who’s winning in their part of the state. Well, it varies from day to week to month – it’s random! But let’s take a look at all the instant prizes of $5,000 and more that have been claimed so far in June. We’ll start in the mountains and head toward the coast.
Way off in the western tip of North Carolina, Brian Rowland of Franklin won the first $1 million top prize of the Red Hot Millions game. Even at the higher elevations, we’re pretty sure “Can you take the heat?” is still the perfect tagline for the game. Down in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Todd Roberts of Lenoir won $10,000 playing Cash Bonanza. And in the small town of Wilkesboro – population 3,000 – Shirlee Steele won $5,000 playing $200,000 a Year for Life.
Over in Charlotte, the biggest city in the state, Angel Lopez won $50,000 playing Loteria. Nearby in Monroe, Miteshkumar Gandhi won $5,000 playing Cash Spectacular. And in Maiden, known to some as “the biggest little football town in the world,” Helen Jones scored a $5,000 prize playing $200 Million Extravaganza.
Lucky winners from all three points of The Triad claimed big prizes. For this two week period, you could say Winston-Salem was the luckiest: a trio of players won $10,000 each playing the $200,000 a Year for Life game. Two Triad players won big prizes playing Cash Spectacular. Janice Broome of High Point claimed a $50,000 prize and Maria Freeman of Greensboro won $10,000 playing the game.
Moving from the Triad toward the Triangle, in Alamance and Orange Counties, two players won big prizes instantly playing $200 Million Extravaganza. Melvin Guy of Elon won $10,000 and Samuel Rogers of Chapel Hill won $5,000. And if you were to pick up I-85 until you almost got to Virginia, you’d find yourself in Vance County. That’s where Manson resident Pattie Watley won a $25,000 prize playing Cash Fireworks.
Jumping from the northern edge to the South Carolina border, down in Scotland County, two players from the small town of Laurel Hill got lucky tickets. Roger Goins won $50,000 playing $50,000 Jackpot and Paul McLean won $10,000 playing $200,000 a Year for Life. In the largest city of the Sandhills, Fayetteville, Vaneka Campbell won $50,000 playing Loteria. Just a few miles down I-95 in Robeson County, a lucky $500,000 instant win went to Sharon Livingston of Lumberton. She won the top prize playing $500,000 Anniversary Cash.
Headed out Highway 264 into Eastern North Carolina, Joseph Mozingo of Farmville won $27,000 playing Tripler Tripler. On the other side of Greenville, Ernestine Bell of Plymouth won $200,000 playing $200,000 Cash. This two-week tour of big instant winners also goes through Maple Hill, which is a remote town near the intersection of Highways 50 and 53 in Pender County. Maple Hill is home to Elwood Taylor who won $5,000 playing Red Hot Millions. And the last stop is about as far east as you can go without crossing a bridge to the Outer Banks. Maria Madero Chavez of Manns Harbor in Dare County won $10,000 playing Cash Bonanza.
