As jackpots grow, winning tickets sold across NC

Five lucky tickets for the jackpot games Carolina Cash 5, Mega Millions and Powerball turned out to be big winners in this weekend's drawings. While the jackpots for Mega Millions and Powerball rolled to $85 million and $160 million respectively, a single Carolina Cash 5 ticket won the $139,065 jackpot Saturday night.

The Cash 5 winner was sold at the Kangaroo Express on Hope Mills Road in Fayetteville. If it turns out that a Cumberland County resident won the prize, it'd mark the 25th Cash 5 jackpot winner from the county. Just last week, a $55,955 Cash 5 jackpot prize was claimed by James Buie of Fayetteville.

For perhaps the second time, someone who lives in Kernersville has won a big prize playing Mega Millions. The $10,000 ticket for Friday's drawing was sold at Chief's Pick-A-Pack on Linville Road in Kernersville. Back in October of last year, a Kernersville woman claimed a $30,000 prize playing Mega Millions.

On to Powerball, where in addition to a pair of $10,000 tickets, someone matched all five white balls to win $200,000. That ticket was sold at the Citistop on Haywood Road in Asheville. This marked the seventh time in July a Powerball ticket sold in the state matched five white balls to win a big prize. Prior to this ticket, three were $200,000 winners, and three were Power Play tickets that scored $1 million each.

Like the $200,000 winner on Saturday night, one of the $10,000 winners was also sold in the Blue Ridge Mountain region. The ticket, which matched four white balls and the Powerball, was sold at Debs Mini Mart on East Main Street in Spindale in Rutherford County. The other $10,000 winner surfaced in the Queen City, at the Harris Teeter on Park Road in Charlotte.

We'll keep an eye on the jackpots this week. Look for news on these winners on our website, or here in the Lucke-Zone blog.

@ SANDON - We don't have a raffle on the calendar right now, including one for the holidays. Sometime down the line, we may do another raffle though :-)

Are you gonna have some kinda raffle this holiday season

@ SANDON - Moving forward, the NCEL plans to roll out more and more self-service machines that would allow players to buy and check their tickets. We have to move at a steady pace when it comes to introducing new technology because we have a responsibility to ensure they function to the highest level possible, and that the equipment will be useful for as long as possible to make sure the investment is cost-effective.

@ BORNLOSER - Our staff's number one goal is to make sure everything is done correctly so that players and the public can be confident in what we're doing. So, doing things promptly is important too, but a low priority compared to ensuring everything is done right and the information shared with the public is accurate. We appreciate your comment that our "neighbors to the north" do a good job; we are sure they are professional. We do our best to respond to questions and comments here on the Lucke-Zone and via our player hotline in a professional manner. We are also listening to suggestions and criticisms so that we can improve our performance in the future.

It`s 11:45 Aug 15 and why are the numbers not posted? You don`t post where the winners are located, so why take so long? A hint, look at the Va. lottery website and get some pointers. They are professionals.

@ CECILB - Thanks for the suggestion.. as our website continues to get new features, we hope to be able to show you more winner info by region.

@ CTICCONI - Everyone's got the same chance to win, but there's definitely no guarantee. Sometimes it just takes one ticket. We hope that you enjoy playing the games for fun.

ibsenk..It was a lady in Arizona who played the same numbers everyday, for six, count them, six years before she won the lottery. Take pick 3..if you been playing 862..that number has not come up for years, but 191 came twice in the same month this year. Of course the odds for pick 5 is worse. I personally don't keep playing the same number. To each his own.

8/03/2011 05:40 - cecil b.

why dont you post each county at the end of every month and tell all the amounts won that is over 5,000 dollars.

I play all the time. I play 5 sets of numbers. Almost every day I miss pick 3 by one number, on 2 of the five. I'm really unlucky or I need to move back to VA. I always hit my numbers there and won on the scratch tickets. Centerville and Louisburg don't have a chance.

Sales are being watched to make sure the maximum number of people have a chance to enter. We hear that a date could be set by the end of this month.

8/02/2011 03:35 - Ava E.

When will they determine the date of the last second chance drawing for the $500,000 Anniversary Cash game?

8/02/2011 02:31 - NC Lottery

@ DIVA - Just a few statistics for you: sales in Mecklenburg County are 3x higher than in Nash County. Which is understandable given how many people live there. But just looking at Nash County winners, here are a few highlights for Cash 5: We've had a share of more than a dozen Cash 5 jackpot wins go to Nash County residents, including three so far this year. Nashville NC winners specifically have won Cash 5 jackpot prizes of: $247,481; $119,556; and $50,000.

wish they would spread some of that in the nashville nc area, we have the highest lottery playing county, with the less big winners.guess i would have to move to fayetteville to win any real money

@THOMASDOUGHERTY - We will be glad to answer your question, Thomas, but you have to be more specific!

8/02/2011 09:07 - NC Lottery

@ IBSENK - the odds of matching 4 out of 5 numbers playing Cash 5 are 1:3387 for each row of numbers you have. Odds of matching 4 out of 5 white balls playing Mega Millions are 1:15,313 and odds of matching 4 out of 5 white balls playing Powerball are 1:19,030 - as with all games where you have a chance to win prizes much larger than your wager, the odds of winning come nowhere close to guaranteeing a win. You can find all these odds and more on our main website.

8/02/2011 07:56 - Kathy I.

I play the same 2 sets of numbers day in and day out in the Carolina Cash 5. I play one set of numbers for both the Mega Ball and Power Ball. Have been doing this for 18 months now without missing a day. I would love to know the odds of getting at least 4 of these numbers to match. I've never won more than $35 in a single drawing. Not a very good return on my investment of $22 a week in lottery tickets.

8/02/2011 07:45 - Thomas D.

What ticket,What game was it and where and when was it sold??

8/01/2011 08:58 - john c.

If I had to guess, I'd say most of the Cash-5 MM and PB winners are quick picks. It's rare that many of "my" numbers show, but the quick picks sometimes surprise me winning 3, 4 or 7 dollars sometimes.

@ VEGOUT - Actually, there was a $1 million-winning ticket sold in Matthews, but whoever bought it never claimed it :-( http://bit.ly/q6VYBQ

8/01/2011 08:46 - valerie a.

8/01/2011 08:29 - sabrina b.

8/01/2011 05:22 - terry l.
