150 big prizes awarded in $200,000 a Year for Life game

You may have read the news of winners from Wake and Forsyth Counties who won “the prize of a lifetime” – $200,000 a Year for Life. The instant game launched on January 25 of this year, and since that time, 155 big prizes have been awarded.

Three of those big prizes are $50,000 a Year for Life wins that went to players from Onslow, Forsyth and Buncombe Counties. In addition to the top-tier prizes, 94 cash prizes of $5,000 and 56 prizes of $10,000 have been won by players from across the state.

One top prize of $200,000 a Year for Life and four prizes of $50,000 a Year for Life are still unclaimed as of August 11. So, what does "for life" really mean?

If you were to win the top prize of $200,000 a year for life, you will continue to receive a check every year of your life, as long as you’re living and breathing. If for some reason you were to stop living and breathing (i.e. you die), your estate (whoever legally controls your possessions after you die) would continue to receive the prize money each year until a total of 20 payments had been made ($4 million guaranteed).

So, $200,000 a year for life means exactly that. If a winner lives for 50 years after winning the top prize, they will get a check every year for the rest of their life. If for some reason that person won, received their first check, and then suddenly died; their estate would still receive checks for another 19 years to reach the 20-year guaranteed prize payout. The system works similarly for folks who win $50,000 a year for life playing this game.

@ DEEP1 - You'll be glad to know that the NCEL pays out about twice as much in prizes to players like you as it does in dollars to education. While our purpose is to raise money for education, we know that players play for a chance to win. The lottery does not determine how the state budget works; lottery money is about 5% of the total state education budget. Lottery funds were never meant to (and will never be able to) cover the entire cost of providing education to students in North Carolina. The $2 billion the lottery has raised for education is extra funding for teacher salaries, school construction, need-based college scholarships and prekindergarten programs.

In relations to the Education question. I understand the lottery is a supplement to education but we also pay taxes to help in education. I play the lottery to win. I expect more winnings than helping education. We give our hard earned tax dollars for education. I feel there should be a higher percentage going to winnings.

@ LAU8KAB - The final drawing date has not been set yet. We expect to know that pretty soon. As soon as we know, we'll announce the final draw date and the final date to enter tickets. Just stay tuned to the Lucke Zone!

@ BUN - From 3/30/06 through 6/30/10, Granville County players won more than $24.2 million in lottery prizes (and county education programs there received more than $8.4 million). Oxford specifically has had four winnres of $100,000 or more. In May, an Oxford resident claimed a $20,000 prize on a Sizzlin' 7's ticket. Winning tickets are distributed at random so there's no way of telling when or where one might show up. We wish you the best of luck!

@ RL - The NCEL has offered motorcycles, sports cars, and trips as part of second chance drawings in the past. On the new Wheel of Fortune game coming out tomorrow, second-chance entrants have the chance to win a trip to Los Angeles to play Wheel of Fortune with Pat & Vanna for prizes. So maybe that's a game that would interest you! :-)

@ DANIEL - We appreciate your creativity and enthusiasm for coming up with this game idea. The details and logistics of designing an entire game are complex, but we are glad to pass your thoughts along to "the powers that be" so they will see your idea. Thanks again for your time to share with us.

some of the scratch offs in Va.you have a chance to win a truck of your choice with a chance to win the same in a 2nd chance drawing, and the same on one for a cruise of your choice, can NC get something like that?

Sorry my comment has nothing to do with this perticular scratch off. Just answered survey questions about a Nascar themed scratch off. I Believe that this scratch off should be the state's thrid $20 scratch off. Maybe there could be 5 $2,000,000.00 winner's, taxes paid. I believe this card would be one of the state's best selling card's ever. Maybe along with matching your winning numbers for prizes, revealing a #3 or #43 race car is how you'd win the grand prize as a tribute four 2 the state's most popular drivers ever. Don't know if the powers that be will see this. If someone knows how to foward this idea to said people, that'd be cool if you'd help me out...

@ JCRAVEN - We have heard other players suggest this. Not sure when or if that feature will be added, but it is something that our folks know some players would like to see added in the future.

@ AFRT04 - So you can see that lottery funds can't cover all the cuts to education; lottery money is supposed to be supplemental funding for specific programs: teacher salaries, school construction, college scholarships and prekindergarten. But when there are budget cuts, lottery money essentially prevents the cuts from being more severe. We are doing everything we can to responsibly increase what the lottery provides for education in North Carolina by offering new games to broaden the number of people who play lottery games for entertainment. We appreciate players like you and local retailers for making this possible; each year we've paid more in prizes and returned more to education, and we hope to continue that trend.

8/12/2011 10:22 - NC Lottery

@ AFRT04 - The lottery has raised more for education every year for five years straight, more than $2 billion total. What is happening is that other sources of funding have gone down. The NCEL provided more than $445 million to North Carolina last year, but that is equal to about 5% of the total state education budget.

8/12/2011 09:02 - JEFFREY Y.

Can you tell me, seriously, how much is REALLY given to education. I know some teachers in the western part of the state, and they (as well as NUMEROUS others) are convinced that very LITTLE is given to education.

8/11/2011 11:50 - NC Lottery

@ RONC - We introduce new tickets all the time because players like different types of games. That's why we have unique play styles and unique prizes so that folks have options. And yes, the more games we bring out, the more prizes we can award, and the more money we can return to benefit education.

8/11/2011 11:29 - Ronald C.

Just trying to sell more tickets this is the worse game NCEL has ever came up with!
