Wednesday night, the lucky number for Pick 4 players was 9-9-9-9. Many folks at the Raleigh claim center Thursday morning were there to claim prizes they won on the number. Diane Harrison, a payroll clerk from Garner, had one of the 237 tickets that wagered $1 and won $5,000 when the combination was drawn.
Harrison said she was “in a little bit of shock” to win the $5,000 prize. After all, it was only the third time she had ever played the Pick 4 game. “It was just a whim. I usually play trip 9’s,” she explained, meaning she usually plays 9-9-9 for the Pick 3 game. “But I had an extra dollar in my pocket, so I figured ‘why not?’” Harrison said she planned to save for a vacation with the unexpected prize money.
In all, Pick 4 players won $1,807,500 in the drawing, by far the largest Pick 4 prize payout in N.C. Education Lottery history. The next largest came on the only other occasion when “quads” were drawn. Earlier this year, the number 2-2-2-2 paid out $645,000 on the March 16 midday drawing.
