So, who won big this week?
The top winner of the week is Jasper Wall, a retired corrections officer from Hamlet in Richmond County. He landed a $232,246 jackpot after his ticket was the only one to match all five numbers in the August 19 Cash 5 drawing. The jackpot has rolled back up to $291,000 for Friday's drawing.
Twin wins of $200,000 went to Powerball players from Asheville and Kings Mountain, pushing the total of five-match winners in North Carolina to 24 for the year. We're waiting to meet number 25 after someone bought another $200,000 winner for Wednesday's drawing in Providence in Caswell County. Saturday's Powerball jackpot is estimated at $61 million.
We're also waiting to meet whoever bought the $10,000-winning Mega Millions ticket for Tuesday's drawing. The Eagles store where the ticket was sold is on Glenwood Avenue, not too far from where the winner could claim their prize here at Lottery HQ in Raleigh. Friday's jackpot is estimated at $14 million.
Since last Friday's update, Pick 3 players hauled in more than $1.7 million. The top Pick 3 payout of the week of $263,080 came last Friday evening. During the same time frame, 18 Pick 4 tickets won the top prize of $5,000 for a total payout of more than $477,400.
Players from Durham and Jacksonville topped the instant winners of the week, after winning $50,000 each playing the Diamond Mine game. $10,000 wins went to a $200 Million Extravaganza winner from Mt. Holly and Cash Spectacular player from Lillington. Since last Thursday, instant winners won more than $9.9 million.
A final note: as we write today's blog, the N.C. coast is preparing for Hurricane Irene. We hope for the safety of our fellow North Carolinians in Eastern North Carolina, and everyone along the eastern seaboard.
