A woman from the mountain town of Mars Hill plans to buy a home after landing the largest prize ever awarded to a Madison County resident. Nicola Chandler, a homemaker, said she cried after scratching off the $50,000 top prize playing Jr. Big Ol' Bucks. She bought her winning ticket at the Subway of Mars Hill on JF Robinson Lane in Mars Hill.
Chandler’s win marks the sixth big win for Madison County and the second for a Mars Hill player. Five of those wins came on instant games, while a $10,000 Powerball win went to a player from Hot Springs. Since the lottery began through June 30, 2010, Madison County players won more than $1.4 million in prizes and Madison County education programs received more than $2.3 million in lottery funds.
