Nothing shines brighter than Carolina Gold

September 26, 2011 Posted by NC Lottery at 5:00 PM

The issue with gold prospecting has always been that it’s difficult to know where to look. Scratch-off players don’t have that problem, especially now that the Carolina Gold game is hitting the stores on Tuesday.

Carolina Gold, our newest $10 instant game, features three $1 million top prizes and more than $37.1 million in total prizes. The game is played by matching one of 15 numbers with one of six winning numbers. Players who reveal a “COIN” symbol in the play area win the prize shown instantly. Those who reveal a “GOLDBAR” symbol win five times the prize amount shown. Revealing a “$100 BURST” symbol wins the player $100 instantly. The game also features more than 19,000 prizes between $200 and $1,000.

The fun doesn’t stop after you’ve scratched your ticket. We’ve added a second-chance drawing that will win one lucky player $1 million, our largest drawing prize ever awarded.

Carolina Gold features another “first” for the NCEL. Each ticket is printed with a QR (which stands for “quick response”) code on the reverse of the ticket, which when scanned by a barcode scanner on your Smartphone automatically takes you to a video explaining the game’s second-chance drawing entry process. For more information, check out the QR code Wikipedia entry. Players without access to a Smartphone may view the video here.

Best of “lucke” everyone!

@ THOMAS - As of Monday morning, a total of 655,754 entries had been made. We wish you the best of luck

3/08/2012 07:51 - thomas m.

where do we stand on tickets being entered in? last count i saw over 600000. i have at least 650 entered on line . me and my 8 kids sure could use that win. good luck everyone .

3/03/2012 11:35 - Teresa D.

Just praying to win this drawing. Have never been very lucky, but I know luck has to change like everything else. Here's hoping its time. ;)

10/28/2011 09:25 - NC Lottery

@ SANDON - RE: raffles... none on the calendar at this moment. But we'll probably do another one down the line ;-)

10/28/2011 09:25 - NC Lottery

@ SANDON - As you know, the overall odds of winning are announced at the beginning of the game, and those odds vary constantly for the life of the game as soon as the first ticket is sold until it's over. So, to answer your question, no there won't be updates with regard to the odds as time passes because they can't be any more accurately estimated than they are at the beginning.

10/28/2011 04:02 - SANDON E.

do you update the (overall odds) when prizes are won and reorded or does that not change. And i hope you have a reffle this holiday season i like those also.

10/19/2011 02:18 - Randy .

Had no luck so far on about 13 of the Carolina Golds :[ , won $500 the other day on the 5th Anniversary however, that was sweet. Waiting for the results on the second chance drawing, how long before the winners are posted??

10/07/2011 11:23 - Ryan K.

@MAINE - The drawing will be determined at a later date.

10/07/2011 07:55 - jermaine j.

when is the carolina gold drawing

10/03/2011 08:42 - Jona M. W.

It's about time somebody won some money from GREENVILLE!!!

10/03/2011 07:36 - Roger K.

was checking out how many top prizes was left on the scratch off's. I notice the symbol that some of the scratch off's have been reordered on some 5 and 10 dollar tickets. that's good to know, how many is left on each ticket. that way i would know to buy that ticket or not,100 counties in NC..hope i will pick up a big winner soon...

10/03/2011 09:25 - NC Lottery

@ SGELUCKY - We appreciate you taking time to share your suggestion here with us in the Lucke-Zone. We have heard this request before and it is something we may be able to offer players like you in the future.

10/03/2011 09:01 - Stephen E.

It would great if the NC Lottery officials let players know how many scratch off tickets remain available for purchase for each game. It seems like it would be easy to put all of this on the website for everyone to see.

10/02/2011 10:41 - herblette w.

I pray and Hope I win for many many good reasons and I'm sure evryone would too & good luck to all'' ( PPL NEEDS MY HELP)

10/02/2011 03:32 - Hai L.

10/01/2011 05:46 - NC Lottery

@ BKEARNEY220 - What we agree with you about is that it is a good idea to play the lottery for fun and entertainment, and money that people need for bills or other neccessities should not be spent on entertainment, including lottery games. That said, spending a few dollars to play a lottery game is something that many people can afford to do, similar to buying a soda or a magazine.

10/01/2011 02:32 - Barbara K.

There are not many people that play the lottery that can afford to loose.Everyone plays for a reason,it is something they need or want, not for fun.Wasting money is not fun.NEED! will make you spend your last dollar.

10/01/2011 11:43 - Karl P.

I have taken a couple of trips to Greenville myself but the key to playing is to play only what you can afford to loose. then you won't be dissapointed...:0)

10/01/2011 09:58 - Barbara K.

I cannot believe this.I have been playing for years all the games and scratch offs.In all this time I have won $1.00.If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck.Maybe next time.

10/01/2011 05:20 - SANDON E.

when you win more than $100.00 and you tell about it on here tell what city you from. here in oxford,nc i bought 8 since then been out only won 15.00 but do feel better since i got to enter for second prize drawing

9/30/2011 02:49 - NC Lottery

@NANCYG - That is awesome! Congrats :-)

9/30/2011 02:48 - NC Lottery

@ ROLLTIDE1 - That is great to hear - congrats on your $100 win! Now if your team wins its football game this weekend, you'll really have it made ;-)

9/30/2011 11:55 - Felipe F.

Hopefully I'm the lucky one! Good luck to everybody!

9/30/2011 11:41 - Robin Q.

My mama and I won a $100.00...We don't play that much and it was a wonderful surprise...

9/30/2011 10:19 - Nancy G.

Woo Hoo! I bought the Carolina Gold after NEVER spending that much for a ticket, and won $50 right off!

9/30/2011 08:26 - Dianne M.

I only like to enter on the second chance to enter my register number for my non winning card.

9/30/2011 08:25 - Hai L.

no

9/29/2011 11:21 - Faye L.

I am expecting Big things to happen by the end of the year for I Believe.

9/29/2011 10:32 - NC Lottery

@ LETHAMAE - Playing lottery games is meant for entertainment, so please don't worry too much about playing if there are bigger things going on in your life! We wish you the best.

9/29/2011 10:30 - NC Lottery

@ RL - no raffles on the horizon right now, but we will have some holiday themed scratch-offs this season! :-)

9/29/2011 10:30 - NC Lottery

@ MACMILLION - Lottery funding for education has increased every year for five years straight. The key piece of information is that $446 million players and retailers helped us provide for education last year is equal to about 5% of the total state education budget. So while lottery funds make a big difference, they can't offset large budget cuts like we have seen over the past few years.

9/29/2011 10:06 - jason l.

I'm going to win the second chance drawing...

9/29/2011 08:51 - Letha A.

It will sure be nice if I could win that money so I can get a kidney transplant.

9/29/2011 08:48 - James L.

I really like the 2nd chance scratch offs.I would love for the lottery to do another Christmas raffle,do you think that might ever happen again?

9/29/2011 05:13 - Donnell G.

Money going to education?? Really? For 4 straight years, Teachers have not had a raise! Thanks education lottery!!

9/29/2011 04:49 - NC Lottery

@ GOMOM46 - The lottery actually pays out about double to players in prizes what we are able to provide to education. We know that folks play for a chance to win, so paying out more in prizes has helped us return more money to education every year for five years, and pay out more in prizes every year for five years to players like you.

9/29/2011 04:25 - NC Lottery

@1ROCK2KING - The $25 prize you won on the $10 Red Hot Millions ticket was one of 204,000 $25 prizes in the game when it started.

9/29/2011 03:38 - Roger K.

my turn to complain,i bought the RED HOT MILLIONS scratch off ticket. i did win 25.00 dollars on it,but the symbol with a bill on fire had only 2.00 dollars on it,to win 10 times the amount, thus 20.00 dollars, and the other symbol was the RED HOT words, thus 5.00 more dollars. I was wandering WHY the money amount on the flaming bill was only 2 bucks and not more, like 5 or 10 or even 20.00.

9/29/2011 03:04 - NC Lottery

@ JIMZOOKIE1 - Yes, the $1 million prize is the only prize that will be awarded through the single 2nd chance drawing for Carolina Gold.

9/29/2011 03:01 - NC Lottery

@ DERRICK - We generally do game styles you might find at other lotteries around the country, and as far as we know, the game you're describing doesn't exist anywhere. We have a variety of games that we hope are interesting to a wide variety of players, so hopefully something we offer will be interesting to you. Thank you for taking time to comment here in the Lucke-Zone

9/29/2011 02:57 - NC Lottery

@CLAUDIA: sure thing! @ SOCO1219: congrats to the hubby! @JOSEPHINE: we wish you luck!

9/29/2011 02:53 - josephine w.

I HOPE TO WIN ONE OF THE PRIZES SO, I CAN BUY A LAP TOP FOR MY DAUGHTER, AND HELP TO REPLACE OLD THINGS IN MY CHURCH, IN OTHER WORDS MY CHURCH NEED FIXING UP. PLEASE WISH ME LUCK.

9/29/2011 01:23 - Shasta M.

Husband just won $200...Yeah!

9/29/2011 12:31 - Claudia S.

Thanks! I appreciate the clarification.

9/29/2011 11:08 - Ryan K.

@Claudia - Good catch, the policy changed and now you no longer need to keep the ticket after it is entered on-line.

9/29/2011 09:25 - NC Lottery

@ Derrick - We go to great lengths to ensure the integrity of lottery drawings using very strict security procedures. An auditor who does not work for the lottery is present for every drawing to ensure this. All of our security procedures are reviewed regularly and confirm that games are fair to all players. We respect your choice whether or not to play, but you should know that we're here to offer fun and fair games to everyone and raise money for education, too - that's why we've awarded more in prizes and provided more to teachers, students and schools every year for five years.

9/29/2011 09:25 - NC Lottery

@ Derrick - The first piece of info we'd share with you is that the room the draw host and the draw machines are in is actually just a blue room. The computer-generated background is added in using broadcast technology just like the weather map is added in behind the weather person using a blue screen or a green screen. Two cameras are used to shoot the Pick 3/Pick 4/Cash 5 drawings and two different computer backgrounds are assigned to each camera angle.

9/29/2011 09:09 - NC Lottery

@ SAMSAM - Congrats on your 'golden' $100 win! :-)

9/29/2011 09:09 - NC Lottery

@ JCC409 - Many state lotteries have contracts with many of the same vendors for gaming services that include instant tickets. While an instant game here in N.C. may have the same name or look similar to a game in another state, the odds, style of game play and prizes may be somewhat or completely different. Long story short, make sure to check out the specific game page on our website for details on how the game works.

9/29/2011 09:05 - NC Lottery

@ ELIZABETH - Thanks for your comment. We are glad that you enjoy playing and that among all the games there are to choose from, there are games that you like. We are also glad that, thanks to players like you and local retailers, we've been able to award more in prizes and provide more to N.C. Education every year for five years straight! :-)

9/29/2011 08:48 - Claudia S.

A response from yesterday says to save the tickets entered for 2nd chance. The entry screen says there is no need to save it after your entry is accepted. Which is correct?

9/29/2011 05:32 - Derrick M.

Here's a concept NCEL. Create a game called "PETER PAY PAUL". This game creates hundreds even thousands of winners daily for the funding will be as always by the players....Only this time, 90% or more of the players are winners because it's for the players with prizes ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. Every player should have a significate win at some point....That unexpected cash(in some cases "needed cash")can now be expected in this concept. All we as players want to see is more than what you are giving out. I want more than a 50\50 chance of winning a large prize in any lottery retailer i go to.

9/29/2011 05:22 - James Z.

Is the million second chance prize the only prize given out as a second chance?

9/29/2011 04:10 - Derrick M.

I think pick 3, 4, 5, and scratch-offs are all geared to generate profits for the state. If anyone noticed, the televised drawing shows a full view of the machines and the alledged drawings, but, if you look closely when they show the numbers as they're drawn, the background is different from the full view background. If it's fair as they claim it is, why is the view different. For me, I would feel more comfordable if they physically drawn the numbers....Until then, I'll keep my money in my pocket.

9/29/2011 12:38 - SAM L B.

Hello everyone...I won $100 today of C. Gold. All thats needed now is some more zeros added!!! All money is good money!!!

9/28/2011 10:02 - Fred H.

I KNOW THIS IS THE BIG ONE!!!!!!

9/28/2011 08:24 - Donnell G.

Folks, its going to be hard to win on this "Gold" ticket. They have to pay for a second chance drawing just as with wheel of fortune and 500000 anniversary which has been a slow seller for the lottery. I usually play the non second chance tickets.

9/28/2011 08:17 - Roger K.

well i got my first one today, last two in the roll, got lucky, got my 20 dollars back at least.

9/28/2011 07:17 - john c.

I have found that the NC state lottery is similar to other states because the high roller ticket looked very similar to Mass. Does one company print these tix for all the states? Does NC match up to the same odds, since Massachusetts is known to be very profitable for the towns & cities.

9/28/2011 07:00 - Mary S.

Me and a friend at work go in together on the scratch offs and we both agree the one's with 2nd chance drawings do not pay off as well. It's been our experience when they first hit the stores they pay out pretty good but that wasn't the case with Carolina Gold. Bought 10 in a row only won $30. Bought 10 more in a row only won $25. Bought 4 more and only won $10. $240 invested $65 won equals $175 in the hole. Don't plan on buying any more of these. There are other $10 games that pay out much better. They do scratch off easy which I like and I'm glad I can help the Education System.

9/28/2011 05:01 - Ryan K.

@gomom46 - You are very welcome to come to a live drawing and view the process and the security measures taken to ensure that what you're talking about doesn't happen.

9/28/2011 04:15 - Ryan K.

@ORLANDO - Very sorry to hear that. Are you going to enter the non-winning tickets into the second-chance drawing?

9/28/2011 04:04 - Ryan K.

@wfitzjohn - For anti-spam reasons, all comments are subject to moderation prior to posting. Best of luck in the drawing and we hope you continue to enjoy our games for entertainment purposes.

9/28/2011 03:36 - Orlando J.

I purchased over 200.00 worth of these tickets from multiple stores and the most I won was 15.00. I have nothing positive to say about this new ticket

9/28/2011 03:21 - Vince K.

GOOD LUCK Everyone on this one. I think I will wait awhile to see how it goes....

9/28/2011 01:11 - whitley w.

i love goooooooold, so i know for sure 100% for sure that this is my winning ticket!!!!!! thanks lucke-zone and gold luck to everyone who play this ticket. ;))))))

9/28/2011 12:37 - wendy f.

OK LUCKE-ZONE Is there a reason my comments aren't coming through? Bet a news station would listen to my story. Don't just ignore me. I'm an avid lottery player!

9/28/2011 12:09 - wendy f.

I just left a comment. I suppose they're sensored!

9/28/2011 11:49 - wendy f.

What a joke. some people will say I'm an idiot. Maybe I am but I still have a right to complain. I bought a $300 pack this morning. I literally scratched 10 tickets before I got a 10.00 winner. I won a total of 70.00 (guess it could have been worse) I will enter all these losers for a second chance drawing though. I gave it a try but no more.

9/28/2011 11:38 - Ryan K.

@robertjr2000 - A fairly recent change to our policy makes it no longer necessary to keep the actual ticket after you enter them online. Thanks @wormser58 for the heads up!

9/28/2011 11:19 - robert r.

After entering tickets for the Second-Chance drawing, do we need to save or dispose of the tickets.....will they be required to claim the prize?

9/28/2011 11:14 - Ryan K.

@ladyluck - As your name would suggest, luck is luck. We've had many winners pick their own numbers and many who let the terminal pick their numbers.

9/28/2011 11:13 - Ryan K.

@gahutch - Since the value is based on a 20 year annuity, the cash prize would be $680,000 before taxes.

9/28/2011 11:10 - Ryan K.

@Denise - Congrats!

9/28/2011 10:36 - Summer K.

wish me luck.... and good luck to everyone else...

9/28/2011 07:19 - Sandra S.

IN DOING MY RESEARCH I DON'T KNOW ABOUT N C LOTTERY...BUT IN NEW YORK EVERYTIME THE JACKPOTS GOT REALLY BIG THE WINNERS WOULD ALWAYS BE A QUIK PICK TICKET.

9/27/2011 11:31 - Glenn H.

If you take the cash payout do you receive $1,000,000 before taxes or $500,000 befor taxes

9/27/2011 10:38 - Rose M.

I played Carolina Gold today and don't usually play new games on the first day they come, always wait until they've been out for a while. I'm changing my strategy I want to be the first million dollar winner of this one!!!

9/27/2011 09:35 - Denise M.

Won $50.00 just a few min ago. Look forward to winning much more. Good Luck to all!

9/27/2011 06:40 - john c.

I got my 1st gold ticket, #12. It's entered for a 2nd chance, so I'm in the runnin' !!!

9/27/2011 04:50 - Reneta M.

The odds of any of the lottery doesn't matter to me because the way I see it the lottery is taking in more than its giving out. NC lottery seems to be the worst.NC lottery repeats more the same numbers than any lottery that I see.So many numbers have never been played but repeats keep coming. I don't think that its fair.

9/27/2011 12:07 - tony a.

thanks for feedback

9/27/2011 09:16 - NC Lottery

@ TONYALLENCZY - Hello again :-) The information we have on Quick Pick vs. players picking their own numbers shows that there's no advantage to playing one way over the other, we see a virtually equal proportion of winners for each play type. More people Quick Pick, however, so we see a larger number of winners who Quick Pick. But again, that's not because there's a statistical advantage to playing that way - the odds of winning are the same no matter what numbers you have. Thanks for the question

9/27/2011 08:56 - tony a.

can you tell me if more of the winners come from the quickpick or picking the numbers them selves could you let me know

9/26/2011 11:23 - Charlene S.

Excited to get my luck going good again! hoping gold is my lucky color & ticket, too!!! :) Live~Love~Laugh

9/26/2011 10:59 - NC Lottery

@ JCC409 - Pretty sure there's no rule that says a $1 million instant winner can't also submit a non-winning ticket for the 2nd chance drawing for the same game :-) If we find out otherwise, we'll update you here in the blog comments

9/26/2011 10:58 - NC Lottery

@ JOANN - We may have responded to your question in another blog entry where you asked, but if we haven't responded, please ask us again here and we'll do the best we can to give you an answer.

9/26/2011 08:46 - reginald c.

I got scratch off gold fever coming my way

9/26/2011 08:10 - john c.

I'm going to get one of the first ones of the group, then wait a week or so and get one near the middle. If I win the million on one of the tickets, can I still submit a losing ticket for the 2nd chance?

9/26/2011 06:57 - JOANN M.

i feel this is the one for me keep reading to find out. because when i win you will know. also i wrote to ask about another raffle and have not gotten an answer. can some one please tell me something?

9/26/2011 06:08 - telly s.

yea!!!!!!...let me get that!!!!!!!!..also good luck 2 you all

9/26/2011 02:40 - NC Lottery

@ STANGMAN - The odds of winning for any game are for the entire printing run of the game, not for a specific pack of tickets. In order to meet our responsibilities to players like you to pay out large prizes and in order to meet our responsibility to the state to provide money for education, it is true that the odds are set up such that many tickets will not win prizes. But each ticket, no matter what pack you buy it from, has the same chance of winning a prize, big or small.

9/26/2011 05:10 - Linda L.

i wanna winnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

9/25/2011 01:25 - stephen b.

I wish NC would start listing the $$$ amount in a pack of tickets...Other states do this, it seems to give players a little more peace of mind that a pack does have some winners in it. I say this because I bought almost 10-12 in a row of the $20 $200,000 a Year for Life, only (1) $20 winner. That's not odds, that's just not being honest to your players. I bought 1, nothing, then another, nothing. Then you think well, at least I'll get my $$$ back on the next one....nothing. So then you think the reason is, a big one soon. Like I said, nothing for almost 12 tickets...that's greed NCLOTTTERY...

9/23/2011 02:18 - Patricia B.

I hope to win big on this one....

9/23/2011 02:14 - NC Lottery

@ BUN - You never know where one will show up! (And neither do we!) :-D

9/23/2011 11:44 - henrietta m.

Will NCEL pleas put some tickets where I can find one..Hint (oxford area)..

9/23/2011 10:59 - NC Lottery

@ KATSTREASURES - It's true that $130 Million Blockbuster prize of $50,000 a year for life could quite possibly be a larger prize than the $1 million annuity for Carolina Gold. The difference, however, is that the Blockbuster prize doesn't fall into the same category as a 2nd-chance drawing; several players had to scratch-off tickets in order to qualify to be eligible to receive that prize whereas with Carolina Gold, everyone with a non-winning ticket can enter.

9/23/2011 09:23 - NC Lottery

@ MACMILLION - There's no telling where that ticket is, there are lots of possibilities. It could be in a store right now for all we know! :-)

9/23/2011 07:29 - Colleen C.

Sounds like fun....I too, love the 2nd chance scratch games.

9/23/2011 12:15 - Donnell G.

when are you guys going to release from the warehouse the lone 3 million dollar ticket from the 200 million extravaganza. Its been in the warehouse for months..time to release it!!

9/22/2011 06:50 - Nancy A.

Sounds like a good one I'll be buying this one for sure the chances are great !

9/22/2011 06:29 - linda m.

hope their better than the anniversary tickets, and don't have to wait so long for the drawing, cause they stop selling.

9/22/2011 04:32 - katonna A.

not as big a payout as $50 mil Blockbuster

9/22/2011 04:04 - Addie C.

I really like the second chance games. Haven't won yet but here's hoping

9/22/2011 03:31 - Marie W.

Second chance drawings are nice, would be better if I could actually win one of them!!!

9/22/2011 01:31 - NC Lottery

@ 1ROCK2KING - The winner of the $1 million second-chance prize will have the option of selecting the prize as an annuity, or a lump sum. Thank you for asking!

hey, looks like a good ticket to buy. i only buy 5 dollar tickets, but looks like i'm going to have to kick it up 5 more to get these.bought 10 five dollar tickets the other day, starting numbers was 50,bought out the rest of the roll to 59. with high hopes of winning something big with 10 tickets in my hand. just my luck, none of them was any kind of winners ,none of them...i was sad,but thats the way it goes,50.00 bucks gone in an instance. you win some and you lose some.. but i will be waiting for the right ticket to buy, then there will happy days from there on.1 million will set us up for life. will it be anuity,or cash option on that ticket...

Have been playing scratch games for lots of money and look forward to a return with second chance drawing. Hope it comes before I go broke.LOL

9/21/2011 09:26 - patrick s.

I have never won a grand prize or a second chance drawing. I will keep my hopes up and keep playing. You can't win it if your not in it. Life is all about risks if you have a little extra money try your luck. you never know what might happen. Please play responcibly.

It seems the scratch off tickets that are 2nd chance don't pay out as often as the regular scratch off tickets.

9/21/2011 07:53 - Stephanie R.

I have never won a second chance drawing and for some I have had over 50 tickets in one drawing but I am still hopeful. I believe I will win at least one before the year is gone :)

I see you posted this yesterday, on Tuesday, was the ticket supposed to go on sale yesterday or next Tuesday? A date, rather than a day of the week, would be nice :)

9/21/2011 02:41 - Lessa C.

Can't seem to win anything from second drawings.Maybe one day I'll win something.

9/21/2011 10:28 - NC Lottery

@ JEFF DYER - It is a scratch-off game that offers a second-chance opportunity. Any ticket that wins a prize cannot be entered into the second chance drawing - it won on the first chance! But any non-winning tickets can be entered into the second chance drawing through the Lucke-Zone for a chance to win $1 million!
