Meet our first $1 million winner of the year

Richard Daveler's 2012 is off to a great big start. The maintenance supervisor from Pikeville scratched off a $1 million prize playing Cash Spectacular, making him the biggest winner of the week - and the biggest instant winner in Wayne County history.

“I scratched off the first one and it was a thousand bucks,” Daveler said. “The cashier thought I was joking. Then I scratched the big one and he really thought I was messing with him.”

Players from Franklin and Orange Counties split the $425,108 Cash 5 jackpot on New Year's Eve. Evelyn Perry, a retired social worker from Hillsborough, plans to use her winnings to pay bills and share with her children. Willie Tabron, a retired construction worker from Louisburg, plans to share with his family, saying his real luck in life is his wife of 60 years and their children.

Shenita Massey, a nursing assistant from Mount Holly in Gaston County, plans to help pay for college for her children and her niece after winning $150,000 playing the $150 Grand game. “Keep the faith, keep believing,” Massey said as she received her winnings. “It really can happen.”

Bhavinaben Rajeshbhai Patel, a homemaker from Winston-Salem, is the latest player to claim the $100,000 top prize in the Wheel of Fortune game. Patel said she plans to use a portion of her winnings to donate to charity. As of Friday morning, one more $100,000 top prize remains to be claimed in the game.

North Carolina players won more than $13 million on instant tickets since last week's update. Five prizes of $10,000 went to players from Canton, Charlotte, Hampstead, Hendersonville and Richlands. Players from Durham and Winston-Salem won $20,000 each playing Carolina Gold. A Money Bag Crossword ticket spelled "$30,000" for a pair of players from Mooresville. And two $50,000 prizes were awarded this week: one to a Cary player on Juinor Big Ol' Bucks, and another to a Charlotte player who won playing Jumbo Bucks.

So there's a look at this week's biggest winners. We wish you the best of luck North Carolina, and see you next week here in the Lucke-Zone.

NCEL should just do away with the Pick 4. The payouts are so paltry that it's not even worth playing. You have a state of 9.5 million people and most days the pick 4 is lucky to have a payout of $17,000. Just get rid of it and stop taking people money.

@ PATZE - Not sure what you mean here. How could we be screening posts if your post is posted above ours? The source of confusion - what's probably happening here - is folks are posting their comments on one blog entry, and then looking for it on another blog entry. We do not screen/censor/delete posts based on how favorable or unfavorable they are. Thanks for giving us a chance to reply to your comment

@ JIM243 - If you study the population of North Carolina and the amount of winners in all the counties, you'll find a very consistent rate of winning. We've had lots of winners from east of I-95, including a Powerball jackpot winner. Everyone has the same chance to win.

@ DERRICK - we just responded to this same comment by you in another blog, but here it is again: we're not deleting comments. Your comments are coming through on multiple blog entries; our recommendation is that you go back and look through all the blog entries.

NCEL, You are misleading players about what's posted and what's not. I posted my thoughts on January 4th or 5th....You gave your remarks, and the following day, my comments could not be found. I believe some comments are purposely pulled because it give others something to think about concerning how this so-called ligitimate lottery operation is conducting business. I'm sure there isn't anything anyone can say to NCEL to have them change several things about how they're cheating the general public. I personally recommend that the public stop playing North Carolina Lottery Games....for it benefit NC alone. Multi state games give(in my opinion)better odds concerning one not being cheated.

Just a interesting fact....Just noticed there wasn't one winner east of Interstate 95 on the last Lucke-Drawings. Every winner was in the central or western part of the state.

NC lottery, sorry, I am not disgrunled so I don't know if my post would make 1/12/2012 Window happy, but did have a somewhat negative post on how many winners here in NC as opposed to other states I have purchased in,etc. I have not seen my post put up which reads it is being screened and reviews not being put up. I am not a blogger, this was my first and last.

@ WINDOW - We do not screen posts based on favorable or unfavorable remarks about the lottery. Look closely at our blog entires going back to last summer and you'll see PLENTY of comments that aren't complimentary of the lottery. We do our best to go through all the comments that come in and post and respond to them. As more people join the Lucke-Zone, there's more and more of that to do.
