29 lucky tickets lead to big wins across the state

Let's jump right into this week's big winners with two Cash Blowout players who collected big prizes. Last Friday, we met a receptionist from Raleigh recently who found out her job of 22 years was being eliminated. Just two days after she found out, she won $4 million. This week, we met a retail manager from Durham who won $1 million playing the same game. There are still two $4 million prizes and six $1 million prizes out there somewhere in the Cash Blowout game.

An Army Veteran from Rutherford County got a "Jumbo" surprise when he scratched off the top prize of $750,000 on a Jumbo Bucks ticket. Watch a short YouTube video of Dan Royal talk about what his good fortune means for his family.

Two players collected Cash 5 jackpot prizes this week. Steve Kidd, from Ramseur in Randolph County, won half of the $566,968 Cash 5 jackpot on Feb. 11. In the Feb. 16 Cash 5 drawing, Thomas Turner III won $200,804. “I said you have to make sure this is not a dream,” Turner said. “We were just elated over it. I’m just blessed. It’s a great blessing.”

We are waiting to meet the ticketholder who won $283,484 in the Feb. 11 Carolina Cash 5 drawing. The ticket was sold at Westview Grocery on West Catawba Avenue in Mount Holly.

Another pair of players won $250,000 each in recent Mega Millions drawings. Watch Michael Bollinger, a police officer and EMT from Maiden in Catawba County, talk about how someone else almost bought his winning ticket. The other $250,000 Mega Millions winner we met this week is Jimmy Broadway of Wake Forest. He won with numbers he first played a year ago but hadn't played since! A Fuquay-Varina player collected a $10,000 in the Dec. 27 Mega Millions drawing this week as well.

Two winning Mega Millions tickets for recent drawings are still "at large." One, a $250,000-winning ticket for the Feb. 10 drawing, was sold at the JP Wilkesboro on U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro. The other ticket, worth $10,000 in the Feb. 14 drawing, was sold at the Cruizers on Hillsborough Road in Durham.

We had eight Powerball winners collect big prizes this week, seven for the Feb. 11 drawing. Players from Timberlake, Charlotte and Hickory won $40,000 each while players from Vale, Maiden, Raleigh and Asheboro each won $10,000 in the Feb. 11 drawing. A Winston-Salem player also claimed a $10,000 prize from the Feb. 1 drawing.

Let's wrap up with some scratch off wins. A pair of $10,000 Jumbo Bucks wins went to players from Raleigh and Gastonia. The Carolina Gold game had three lucky winners this week: a $20,000 winner from Greensboro; and $10,000 winners from Durham and Wilson. A Fayetteville player won $10,000 playing $200,000 a Year for Life, and a player from Florida won a $10,000 Extreme Green prize. Three players won $20,000 instant prizes: an Asheville player on $4 Million Cash Blowout; and a Mount Holly player on Break the Bank. Last but not least, a $50,000 Junior Big Ol' Bucks prize went to a player from Rockingham.

We'll see you here in the Lucke-Zone next week. Until then, we wish you the best of luck!

Luckless, i always go to very nice areas to buy lotto tickets compared to poorer areas. The rich areas are the so called job creators and therefore, winning tickets are there...it has worked for me. Check out the store where the winning powerball was bought in rhode island.

2/25/2012 11:13 - NC Lottery

@ LUCKLESS - If you talk to a professor of math and statistics, he or she will tell you that places where more people live and play the lottery do not have a better chance to win; there are just more people playing there. When the odds are the same for everyone, you expect there to be an even *proportion* - not number of winners - in different areas.

2/24/2012 08:31 - jerry s.

Please tell me, if everyone has an equal chance of winning, why people around Raleigh, and the Piedmont, win more? If the tickets are "randomly distributed", then why are they not "randomly distributed" to southeastern N.C.?? The number of players should not matter if the tickets are "randomly distributed"...! Someone knows where the tickets are sent, or they may be all sent to the same store!!!

I also think it is great that a winner has given part of his winnings to other options! They were actually in the position (as they stated) to give it all away. You are comparing people that have it all to someone that just struggles from day to day.I,also would love to give to my grandchildren but we are not blessed to have all we need in life.Have you seen the news?Baby boomers are fighting just to stay warm, all jobs are in China.I live on a street that 80% of people have lost their jobs in the last 2 years.Everything is not about ME,I.or MY.

@ DERRICK - Your question is loaded with incorrect assumptions about how the gaming industry works, so you make it complicated to respond. You will notice that there are draw breaks of various length anywhere lotteries operate. This has to do with accounting, not the draw process. It would seem from the persistence of your questions that you have a genuine interest in the gaming industry; asking the lottery questions on our blog is probably not the best way to get a comprehensive understanding, though. We recommend doing some formal research.

2/21/2012 03:57 - Derrick M.

@ Lucke-Zone, If all online lottery tickets(pick 3, pick 4, and Cash 5)in NC print the necessary info(date, time, serial#, etc.) on the ticket at the time of purchase, why is there about a 15 minute gap between the time NCEL stop players from playing and the actual drawing?.. Is this the time needed to have your SUPER SYSTEM select combinations that pay the least? I say, to help make it fair and random, allow players to purchase online tickets up to one minute before the drawing. Afterall, tickets have all the information on them.

@ KIDDZA - Hey, glad to hear about your good luck on Lucky Clover & Love to Win!!!

2/20/2012 10:20 - NC Lottery

@ 1ROCK2KING - Yes, we have heard from some folks that used to Power Play for $2 who still buy $2 Powerball tix. We love having $1M and $2M winners!

2/20/2012 09:53 - Roger K.

since the pb game has changed,i have notice that alot of people are not purchasing the powerplay option.I went to powerball.com. Seen alot of 1 million dollar winner from all across the USA.There were no tickets that added the Power Play to win $2 million..They was all 1 million dollars winners. When I use to buy tickets,I played the powerplay for two bucks, but now when I buy them,I just get the two dollars ticket now, without powerplay.Guess winning a million for two dollars, ain't too shabby. That's all I need anyway, but tax'es will eat up most of it.

2/19/2012 07:57 - Donnell G.

player....i always drive 17 miles to mt holly or 9 miles to cherryville buy cash 5. All of the big winners out of gaston county that win cash 5 comes from mt holly or cherryville. a woman won a big cash 5 jackpot and at the same time, bought a scratch off and then won 5 grand at the same store!! Some dude won 500k in mt holly about a month ago playing scratch offs. I know why those 2 are chosen for big jackpots, but will not say. Looks like i will have to drive to wake county to win something.

2/19/2012 06:22 - DAWN N.

I was thrilled this past week to get a "pot of gold" on Lucky Clover & a "cupid" on Love to Win Scratch off tickets. I was beginning to think that neither of them existed. BUT it is true...$50/$40...for a $2/$1 scratch-off. Got to play to win and be able to afford to loose to try to win. Good Luck!!!

2/19/2012 05:19 - Dollie D.

II expect to get paid this year do not let me down.

2/19/2012 03:11 - NC Lottery

@ BK - a lucky lottery ticket does not know the identity of who is purchasing it. Again, everyone has the same chance of winning regardless of who they are, where they live, where they buy a ticket, or how much money they make. The family who won the jackpot in Greenville planned to use some of their winnings to pay for their grandchildren's education, and to give some of it to worthy charities as well. We think its great that these folks considered options like that for a portion of their winnings.

2/19/2012 11:44 - Barbara K.

Wasn't it in Greenville NC that the Banker won big but he really didn't need it as he and his wife already had everything in life that they needed.

2/19/2012 11:40 - Barbara K.

People, I live in Franklin County ,about 5 minutes from Wake County.I buy a lot of my tickets in Wake County and have been playing all the lottery games for years and have won $1.00,that's all so all Wake County winners must be on the Cary side because it is not on the north side.Like I said we may need to move out od NC altogether or get one of those high paying jobs with the NC lottery.

2/19/2012 10:46 - NC Lottery

@ LOTTO KING - its true that, to win, you have to play! :-) See you on Facebook

2/19/2012 10:46 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER - Whoa, you know the Cash 5 jackpot winner? That is great to hear!!!

2/19/2012 10:45 - NC Lottery

@ GRASSHOPPER - Yes, the $1 million winner on 'Cash Blowout' could have received the prize as a 20 year annuity instead.

2/19/2012 10:44 - NC Lottery

@ SCORPION KING - Where the big-winning tickets show up varies from day to day, week to week. Take a look at our other blog entries about the week's big winners and you'll see what we mean.

2/19/2012 10:43 - NC Lottery

@ MARYLOU - Congrats on your $500 win! Best of luck!

2/19/2012 10:24 - JANET P.

Sure wish Greenville north carolina could have winners like other larger cities.

2/19/2012 07:08 - Tommy L.

I play the lottery because I enjoy trying to win not because I have too. I do agree that the big wins are in the larger city. It would nice see a list of winners by countys over the last two years maybe you would change our thoughts about this.

2/18/2012 03:54 - Roger K.

my sister lives in Raleigh,I have told her time and time again that she should be buying any kind of tickets there. Hell, she has a shop right off Capitol Blvd. I was in Florida the first of the year, played scratch offs and powerball down there, did'nt win nothin, now I see where the person from Florida won here in NC,lucky rascal. I would like to have plenty of money,no worries, just how to enjoy it,before I pass this world on!!!!

2/18/2012 02:52 - MARY LOU R.

I have always been lucky. Last night I hit 3 numbers on the Mega. I won $500 on a scratch off (JUMBO BUCKS). I think I will win the MILLIONS soon. DREAM ON!!!!

2/18/2012 02:00 - Herman S.

Raleigh, Durham, Raleigh. I'm moving to Wake county. Hopefully a millon dollar prize will come my way. If you want to have a chnace of winning, purcahse you tickets in Wake county.

2/18/2012 01:26 - jonathan p.

Geez, win a million, take a lump sum and end up with 40%. Gotta love that.

2/18/2012 11:31 - Jackson S.

I personally know the persons that won the 283 thousand dollars in Mt. Holly. It could not have happened to a better family.

2/18/2012 11:29 - Antoine B.

Congrats to all of the winners ! If you seriously want to win, ... all you have to do is KEEP PLAYING. :)

2/18/2012 11:10 - Wanda F.

Lord Lord i show be glad when its my turn like my daddy always said you gotta be in it to win it so im definately in it waiting on my harvest.

2/18/2012 10:56 - Gary R.

Winning the lottery is a matter of luck. However, it is indeed more likely that most of the winners will be in the more heavily populated areas of the state. We did have a huge Powerball winner here in Buncombe County last year. Again, luck was the reason. The fellow picked (or had picked for him) the correct numbers. In a lottery where you pick your own numbers, I would suggest that you always play the same numbers; no exceptions. And always play every draw. It would give you a slight advantage. A number of players have won by playing this way. I have played the same Carolina Cash 5 numbers every single draw since the very first draw. I will either win or lose based on this strategy.

2/18/2012 09:26 - NC Lottery

@ TADPOLE - The $1 million ticket sold in Jacksonville hasn't been claimed yet! We are looking forward to meeting the winner.

2/18/2012 09:26 - NC Lottery

@ LUCKLESS - What happened within one weeks' worth of wins only shows where luck happened this week. We've had big winners down east before and we will surely have them again.

2/18/2012 09:24 - NC Lottery

@ LWATSON8447 - The delay in the number of top prizes remaining in the Cash Blowout game was due to the fact the winner took an extra 24 hours to decide whether she wanted to claim the prize as an annuity or a lump sum. So the formal claim didn't go through the system until Friday afternoon.

2/18/2012 07:54 - Emma E.

I want to be the next big winner. My congrats to the ones who have already won. It's a blessing. Keep winning!!

2/18/2012 12:27 - john T.

Must be nice to live in Wake County. A tremendous amount of wins come from there. I guess the smaller counties don't stand a chance of a big prize. I know, more people in Wake so more win.NCEL spread the wealth!

2/17/2012 08:03 - Ronald C.

It seems strange that the first 4 million dollar prize on the new 20 dollar scratch off is purchased less than 1.5 miles away from lottery headquarters

2/17/2012 08:02 - LEONARD W.

The number of $1 million prizes left on the $4 million scratch from the list shows 7 remaining and should be 6. Information only.

2/17/2012 07:15 - jerry s.

I rest my case, the big winners are from Raleigh, Durham, Raleigh (again) Greensboro, Durham (again) and even Rockingham. I may have been born at night, but not LAST NIGHT. Us poor folk in southeastern N.C. won`t see these big tickets. If it`s "totally random", then why doesn`t someone in this end of the state win the big one?? Please, don`t insult our intelligence by your patent answer.
