By definition, jackpots are always big. But at $200 million, Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is the largest for the game this year. The roll that has led to this “Mega Millions Madness” started after the Jan. 24 drawing when a perfect ticket sold in Georgia hit the jackpot for $72 million. Friday’s drawing features the largest jackpot since Dec. 27, 2011 when it was $206 million.
The jackpot for North Carolina’s jackpot game, Carolina Cash 5, weighs in at $322,000 for Friday’s drawing. One or more tickets could match all five numbers to win the jackpot or it could roll to a larger amount. In either case, the Cash 5 jackpot on the line Saturday night will share billing with a $60 million Powerball jackpot.
So that’s the story on the jackpots. How about the biggest winners in North Carolina this week?
Top honors go to Laurie Gray, a lucky woman from a town with a lucky name: Horseshoe. Now that she has won $1 million playing Red Hot Millions, some might say she’s the luckiest person in all of Henderson County. “I have two girls in college,” Gray said. “So I feel good knowing that the lottery money is going to education and scholarships.”
With a $100,000 Mega Bucks win, Jeffrey Sevacko of Charlotte said he was having “a really good day” as he collected his prize money at lottery headquarters. He bought his lucky ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Charlottetown Avenue in Charlotte.
There are a dozen winning tickets of $10,000 or more to talk about in jackpot games this week, seven of them for Mega Millions. Prizes of $10,000 were awarded to players from Durham, Chapel Hill, and Louisburg. Three players multiplied their winnings with the Megaplier. A Burgaw player won $30,000 and players from Walkertown and Fayetteville won $40,000 each. A $10,000-winning ticket in the March 13 drawing, sold at the Star Mart in Troutman, has yet to be claimed.
Powerball wins of $10,000 went to players from Ashoskie and Fayetteville. Another $10,000-winning ticket was sold at the Smoker Friendly in Granite Falls but hasn’t been claimed as of Friday afternoon. A $69,255 Cash 5 jackpot went to a Charlotte player whose ticket matched all five numbers in the March 8 drawing.
Before we sign off, let’s look at big scratch-off wins this week. Instant wins of $10,000 went to players from Raleigh, Raeford, Charlotte, Canton, and Greenville. A Henderson player landed $20,000 on a $150 Grand ticket. A pair of $50,000 prizes went to players from Arden, and Los Angeles California who won playing Junior Big Ol’ Bucks and Maximum Green, respectively.
That’s the week in winners. We wish you have a fun and safe weekend - and, as always, best of luck, North Carolina!
