Four $1 million tickets are among unclaimed prizes

Lucke-Zone members who play draw games: Do you have a special place where you keep your tickets? We’re hoping that whoever bought the following tickets worth between $200,000 and $1 million signed them and stored them somewhere safe.

In North Carolina, players have 180 days from the date of a drawing to claim prizes on winning tickets. That means that the $200,000-winning Powerball ticket sold at the Scotchman on N.C. 210 in Benson for the Nov. 12, 2011 drawing is set to expire on May 20.

At this time, four tickets worth $1 million are out there somewhere. For each ticket, here are the details on what game it is for, the date of the drawing, and the store it was sold at:

Of the four North Carolina tickets that won $250,000 in the record Mega Millions drawing on March 30, just one remains unclaimed. It was sold at the Kroger on Six Forks Road in Raleigh.

The lottery does all it can to generate awareness of where big-winning tickets like these were sold so that the prizes can be awarded. In the event a winner doesn’t present a winning ticket within 180 days, half the prize money benefits education and the other goes back into the prize pool for future games. We hope to meet these winners soon and wish everyone the best of luck.

@ TRAVIS - Airing the daytime drawing on TV isn't part of our contract with WRAL. You probably already know that you can view the drawing online.

Why doesn't the mid day lottery drawing be on TV?

@ PLAYER ELVIE - You can check our website the same night as the drawings are held.

At what time do the power ball numbers come out, and is there anyway to find out that same evening?

@ PIERBOY - When a winning ticket expires, the money that would have been paid out to the ticketholder is split 50/50 between prizes in future games, and money for education. All of the lottery's operations and finances are audited on a regular basis.

Well I know that craven has a chance of winning like any other county or state. But I have never heard of anyone winning. I heard of people winning in craven county just not havelock.

@ NINA W. - Expiration is a standard feature of lottery tickets, not just in North Carolina. For the lottery's financial records, it can't have unclaimed prizes on the books indefinitely. A time frame of 180 days is close to six months, which allows plenty of time for a winner to make arrangements to travel to one of our regional claim centers to collect.

@ PLAYER - Folks in Havelock and Craven County have the same chance of winning a prize as anyone playing anywhere else in the state. It's all just a matter of luck, and you have to remember that when you see news about a winning ticket showing up somewhere in the state, there were many non-winning tickets sold in that area, too. Through June 30, 2011, Craven County players won more than $47.8 million in lottery prizes. More than two dozen players from Havelock have won $5,000 or more, including six prizes of $50,000 to $417,611.

@ REDROLLER - Two of these four $1 million tickets were sold at stores several counties away from Raleigh & Charlotte. Have you looked at our other blog entries? We cover lots of information about winners from all over the state.

ITWUZNME who purchased the ticket. Every 1 would no if it wuz me...:-)

Why is there an expiration date to claim winnings anyway? It doesn't seem fair! I'd be upset if I found I had a winning ticket one day after expiration. I realize 180 days seems like enough time, but sometimes it's not. How about reconsidering those expiration dates!

4/19/2012 11:31 - Karen M.

I wish I had a winning ticket.
