Jackpots: $554,932 Cash 5 split; Powerball up to $146 million

Three ticketholders who play jackpot games in North Carolina won big over the weekend.

In Monday’s Carolina Cash 5 drawing, two tickets matched all five numbers to split the $554,932 jackpot and win $277,466 apiece. The tickets were sold at the Ready Mart on North Fayetteville Street in Asheboro, and at the Derita BP Amoco on West Sugar Creek Road in Charlotte. The winning numbers for Monday’s Cash 5 drawing were: 6-9-14-34-37.

Because no ticket matched all six numbers in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, the jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing rolled to an estimated $146 million. A ticket sold in Raleigh, however, did match four white balls and the Powerball to win $10,000. A lucky player bought the ticket at the Food Lion on Capital Boulevard. The winning numbers for the drawing were: 13-14-41-49-59 and 14 for the red Powerball.

The lottery advises players to sign winning tickets immediately to establish ownership, but reminds winners they have 180 days from the date of a drawing to collect their winnings. For prizes of $100,000 or more, winners must complete the claims process at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

While the Carolina Cash 5 jackpot resets to $50,000 for the Tuesday, May 29 drawing, the Mega Millions jackpot for the same date has grown to an estimated $32 million if taken as an annuity. If a single jackpot winner were to claim the prize as a one-time lump sum, it would be worth $24.2 million.

@ DEEP1 - The part you're absolutely correct about is that lottery funds account for less than 10% of the annual education budget. So lottery funds do not and will never cover every expense. But, the $2.35 billion players have helped us raise since 2006 have made a difference for the specific programs supported by lottery funds.

Man the lottery doesn't even account for 10% of the education budget. The schools did just fine before the lottery and probably will continue as long as there are taxpayers in the state.

@ MACMILLION - Decisions about teacher pay/raises are way beyond the lottery's control - we just operate the games fairly, award prizes, and transfer the education funds to the state. But we're all looking forward to seeing the overall economy recover to the point that industries are hiring more and government budgets arent so squeezed.

@ DRMINIPARK - One player winning three jackpots would be an amazing story! We appreciate your comments about lottery funds and education. The past few years have been challenging for the decision-makers, but lottery funds have certainly been a solid and growing source of money for teachers, students, and schools. Again, best of luck!

I will be the first in North Carolina to win all three jackpots. The Carolina Cash Five, The Mega Millions and the Powerball. First in North Carolina history. These are my favorite games and my friends keep telling me stop playing. I said I just can't give up just yet. I see what education can do for the kids of North Carolina. I also see how the schools have improved structure wise over the past years that the lottery has been in play. I wish that we would have had the opportunity of lottery funds when I was in school 30 years ago.

@ FRANKHOYLE - Out of fairness to players everywhere, Frank, nobody knows where a top prize winning ticket will show up until someone scratches it off! :-)
