It's roasting hot outside, but we heard some cool winners' stories at lottery headquarters this week. Let's go!
Like many people, Brenda Crisp of Burlington plays Powerball occasionally. While she enjoyed dreaming about what it might be like to win, it was someone else’s dream that led to her winning $1 million. “A guy I work with told me he had a dream I won the lottery,” Crisp said. “It hasn’t really set in yet that I did.” After hearing her co-worker's dream, Crisp bought a Quick Pick ticket for the June 27 drawing, matching all five white balls to win the prize.
Another Powerball player who collected a big prize this week is a McLeansville resident who won $40,000 in the June 23 drawing. Saturday's Powerball jackpot is an estimated $50 million.
Beverly Harris of Durham does just about everything for her 79-year-old dad, Hezekiah Smith, including buying Carolina Cash 5 tickets once a week at the Food Lion in Woodcroft Shopping Center. It was there at her dad’s favorite store where, on the day before Father’s Day, Harris bought one of the tickets that turned out to be worth $235,759 in the June 20 Cash 5 drawing.
Steven Walker of Winston-Salem usually plays Carolina Cash 5 numbers based on family birthdays that are significant to him. But it was a set of numbers he chose at random that won him a significant prize. Walker matched all five numbers drawn on June 23 to win the $106,339 jackpot. Heading into Friday's drawing, the Cash 5 jackpot stands at $178,000.
An Asheville woman won $250,000 playing Mega Millions. Mary McQuaide bought her winning ticket for the April 10 drawing at Sonny's Package on Sweeten Creek Road in Asheville. Other Mega Millions players, from Calabash, Nashville, High Point, and the Granite Falls area claimed prizes of $10,000 to $20,000 this week. Friday's Mega Millions jackpot stands at an estimated $75 million.
An Oklahoma woman's job as a fixture contractor brought her to North Carolina recently. After spending the day installing fixtures in a local pet store in Raleigh, Sally Priest bought and scratched off the top prize on a $125,000 Casino Cash ticket while sitting in her hotel room.
In all, more than $10.8 million in instant scratch-off prizes were awarded this week. A Burlington player won $10,000 playing 20X the Money. A Cash Spectacular ticket led to $10,000 in prize money for a Raleigh resident. A pair of Carolina Black players, from Fayetteville and Oxford, won $10,000 apiece. A Greensboro player won $10,000 playing $200,000 a Year for Life. A top prize in the $30,000 Taxes Paid game was awarded to a player from Enfield.
As we often do, we wrap-up the wrap-up with a look at North Carolina's draw game prize totals. Since Thursday, June 21, Pick 3 players won more than $2.2 million; Pick 4 players won more than $783,000, including 26 top prizes of $5,000; and Cash 5 players won more than $339,000.
Speaking of Pick 3, don't forget that July 1 is the start of our Pick 3 Green Ball Bonus Draw, where players could win bonus cash every night during the promotion.
Last but not least, y'all take care in this extreme heat. We'll see you next time here in the Lucke-Zone.
