A pair of Cash 5 jackpots and a $1 million Powerball prize

From the mountains to the beach, to the Virginia border, Charlotte, and down east, five tickets won big this weekend.

On Friday night, a ticket sold in Wilson County won the $323,228 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot. The Piggly Wiggly on South Parker Street in Elm City sold the ticket.

While the Powerball jackpot rolled on Saturday night, three North Carolina tickets won big, including a $1 million prize. That ticket, which matched all five white balls, was sold at the Garrett Mini Mart on East Main Street in Stoneville in Rockingham County. If that store name sounds familiar, it's because a $244,086 Cash 5 jackpot winner bought his ticket there this summer!

Two tickets matched four white balls and the Powerball to win big. A Power Play ticket sold at the Kerr Drug on North Howe Street in Southport in Brunswick County won $40,000. The other ticket, worth $10,000, was sold at the Citistop on Charlotte Street in Asheville.

On Sunday night, the Cash 5 jackpot of the weekend was hit. The winning ticket, worth $62,122, was sold at Sam's Mart on Brookshire Boulevard in Charlotte.

Here is the blog where we responded on Wednesday: http://bit.ly/OQ9uGy Lottery funds benefit specific education programs in North Carolina: teachers' salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten for at-risk four-year-olds, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid. Lottery funds make a difference for these programs but will never cover every education need. Franklin County has received more than $9.8 million for these programs; you can read more details here: http://bit.ly/QLdrCe

@ BKEARNEY - 1) We are mainly here to answer questions about lottery games. When you accuse the lottery of different things, we simply provide facts. 2) The suggestion we made is because games of chance are supposed to be fun, and the comments you leave show that you're not having fun. 3) We provided a lengthy answer to your question about pencils at the elementary schools in the blog where you asked the question. The general assembly directs lottery funds to pay for specific programs: teachers' salaries, school construction, prekindergarten, and college scholarships. Lottery funds make a difference but will never be able to pay for every need. 4) We appreciate our players and retailers very much. Different people worked on the communications staff six years ago when the lottery started.

I know how old this is and I am sure there are plenty of people that have worked 7 day weeks also but I think the people have a right to know where their money is going and this is a blog. Are you telling me not to play the lottery because I have an opinion and keep up with what the lottery is doing.I will be glad to not play ,you put that in writing ,sign and date it and we will call it quits. I never got an answer to my question about stores asking for money to buy pencils for the elementary schools either. I am sorry,I did not understand that it was the work of these employee's that made the lottery possible as I always thought it was the people that purchased tickets that made the lottery possible and also made it possible for you to have a job to pay you a bonus. Please except my apology as I did not understand!!!!

@ LUCKLESS - Right now the bank account where the prize money was deposited is frozen pending the outcome of the ongoing legal process that will determine the facts of the case and the outcome.

@ BKEARNEY - From all the comments you've left over the last year, it sounds like you should consider not playing games of chance. The information you're referring to is more than six years old, and was a one-time form of compensation for employees who often worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week to get the lottery started. The work those employees did has made it possible for the lottery to award billions in prizes and provide billions to support North Carolina education.

I want to know the status of the "illegally obtained" million $ ticket. Has the NCEL recouped the money? I would like to know how the guy new to grab that particular ticket. Seems all this has gone silent on the news.
