Powerball and Cash 5 pay off in weekend drawings

In this weekend’s drawings, we had a $1 million Powerball winner and a $337,126 Cash 5 jackpot winner.

On Saturday, Terry Gray of Asheboro played the lottery at Kelly’s 49 on Old N.C. 49 in Denton and is the owner of a Powerball ticket worth $1 million. The ticket matched all five white balls but not the Powerball in Saturday night’s drawing, beating odds of 1 in 5.1 million. Two tickets sold in the Triad have won $1 million prizes in the Powerball game in the past two drawings.

Besides the $1 million winner, a $3 Power Play ticket sold at the Buy & Go on College Road in Wilmington matched four white balls and the red Powerball and won $40,000. A ticket sold on Main Street in Albemarle matched four white balls and the red Powerball and is worth $10,000.

Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot is an estimated $151 million if taken as an annuity or $95.8 million if taken as a lump sum.

Another big win came in the form of a Carolina Cash 5 ticket sold at the Stanfield Mini Mart on Stanly Street in Stanfield. The ticket matched all five numbers in Sunday’s drawing and won the $337,126 jackpot. The jackpot had rolled since the Jan. 20 drawing when a player in Fayetteville won the $50,000 jackpot.

Have a great week and best of luck!

@ PIRATE_2015 - The thing about games of chance is that your odds of winning a prize dont change over time. Every time you get a ticket, your odds aren't better or worse based on previous experiences. We talk to players every day about this.. if you're having fun, good luck; if you don't enjoy it, maybe taking a break from games would be a better option for you. We wish you the best either way

I have spent a lot of money over the past couple months,on instant games as well as numbered games.I can not understand how you can buy as many tickets as I have, and win a dollar every once in a while.I can not believe the $20.00 tickets I have that are none winners.I do not mean a few, many, many and have not won a thing. On a $20.00 ticket,if you win $10.00 the lottery is still making money.

Lucky-Zone-I am not saying only large towns win big ,I am saying the same areas win big or small. It has probably been close to 3 years we have been going thru this so that means nothing has changed and my opinion is the same.I,like everyone else have a right to my opinion and that is all it is as long as everything is kept honest.I am sorry but you have to expect people to question this when winners are from the same areas. This is only human nature and to answer as you do is just your job which we expect.

@ PATZE - An external firm is hired by the Office of the State Auditor to conduct an annual financial audit of the NCEL. Those audit reports are available on the State Auditor's website. An external firm is hired to conduct a biannual security audit and a biannual performance audit of the NCEL which are reported to the NCEL Commission and the State Legislature. An external CPA firm conducts an audit of each instant game which is reported to the NCEL. An external CPA firm supervises the NCEL's daily drawings and reports exceptions from the norm to NCEL audit & security. Each ball set used in the NCEL's daily drawings is checked approximately three times a year by the Department of Agriculture Standards Laboratory. Internal audits are conducted on a biannual schedule, and the reports are approved by the NCEL Commission.

@ BKEARNEY220 - We respect everyone's right to his or her opinion. But the conversation we've been having with you for more than a year is about this key point: Players in big cities have no advantage over players in small towns. Ask a lottery player from a big city if it's easy to walk into a store and win a lottery prize. The truth is that it takes a ton of luck to win a big prize no matter where you live. We wish all our players the very best of luck.

@ HENRY - We appreciate your comments and views, but please try to avoid directing negative remarks at other players. Everyone has a right to their own views, including folks we don't agree with.

The lottery is a game of luck and it is not endorsed or supported by God because it has the emotional element greed; so PLEASE stop praying to hit. However, I would like to thank NCEL for implementing the Lucke-Rewards program for us non-winners. The BOTTOM LINE: NCEL is primarily design to pay winners; we are fortunate that NCEL view non-winners as valuable customers and create games to afford us a second chance to be a winner. Stop attacking and be thankful. But I guess you cannot do that because of GREED.

the lady in the raleigh area most be just waking up from a deep sleep. for years all if not most of your big winners were coming from down east.i have been playing since day one and i know this. still waiting for a chance to come to raleigh to pit up a big check. can't use the money in the nursing home.

I look at the winners on the lotterys homepage and I see winners from all overnorth carolina.Big towns and little towns,I think its great and exciting,we had a 100 thousand dollar scratch off winner here and we are a small town,so the winners are everywhere and the prizes are distributed all over.It all goes back to lady luck on your side and god on the other.

I am so glad to see other people are seeing winners are in the same area's.You may say that small or big towns have the same chance of winning but 99% of the winners are from the same areas. They may be from a small town but the same area.Goldsboro, east and Greensboro ,West.I can even understand big towns winning the Mega Million & Powerball more often but scratch offs can not be explained as no one is suppose to know where the winning #'s are in a roll of tickets but oddly enough even the scratch off winners are from the same area's.I live in a tiny ,tiny town and have never know anyone to win over a couple dollars.I have been playing for over 6 years and I did finally win $2.00 the other day on a scratch off.WOW! was I surprised as I have never won over $1.00 in over 6 years. You do have Raleigh winners but no winners from small towns around Raleigh.I must agree with Debbie.

Could you please answer a couple of questions for us? Our question is for the NC Lottery Headquarters? Maybe we missed this information on line, if so sorry, we were wondering in NC,who inspects the NC Lottery to make sure all is right? Is there a yearly audit on Scratch tickets( count vs winners) is there a yearly inspection of the machines for drawings? If it is audited, is it done by an outside auditing company? Are auditing reports made available to the public like in some states? We know in many states it is, but we heard it's up to each state. Thank you for enlightening us on the process.

at NCEL, I do check the website frequently for top prizes as well as what's remaining on the scratch off games. I am glad to know that the cash 5 was won by someone in Raleigh. However, I was referring to top prizes in Scratch Offs and not necessarily Cash 5 , Power and Mega balls. I would to see more top prizes in scratch off games as whole and to see more of those winnings in Raleigh and to the EAST of Raleigh and not concentrated in the West. Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it!

@ SCORPIONKING - We'll forward your comment and suggestion. Keep in mind that not everyone has the same opinion about what type of prize they'd like to use their points for the chance to win. Also, you will see different types of drawing options in the future; for example, this month you can enter to win a racing-themed package. Thank you again for the feedback

@ DEBBIE - Last night's $158,768 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot was won by a ticket sold in Raleigh. Also, here's a link you can copy & paste into your web browser for more info about winners from Wake County. Players in every part of the state, big city or small town, have the same chance of winning - all just a matter of luck. The daily average of lottery prizes awarded has continued to grow. The prize structure for scratch-off games varies by game; you can always check our website to find one that has the kind of prizes you'd like to play for a chance to win.

Congratulations to those who win....but, I would love to see more winnings in Raleigh,NC and East of Raleigh. All major winning are always West of Raleigh such as the Triad, Charlotte/Mecklenburg and the Mountains too. Please send more winnings to Raleigh. And by the way....Since Tom Shaheen left the winnings don't seem to be as great. When you buy scratch offs, you may receive a dollar or two but, nothing significant. The top prizes are so few. I think the Ed Lottery needs to improve this lack of winnings on Scratch Offs and put more winning in circulation to all of NC and not just one concentrated area such as the Triad and west of it. A suggestion would be to put at Least 10 to 20 top prizes instead 4 to 6. That's not enough incentive for people to even buy many scratch offs. Because finding a top prize in NC is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Due to the number of players and LuckyE players can we see 50 for $500.00 drawings monthly instead of just one $25,000 winner? It makes no sense having one player benefit with the entire second chance pool. NCEL need to level the prize distribution so others who are investing on the games will rather see 50 players win $500.00 than one holder getting $25,000.

@ RICHARD - As luck would have it, there have been some big winners in Greensboro and the Triad area lately. But that doesn't mean they had a better chance of winning than anybody else, they just had the good luck to win. We wish you + all our players the best of luck :-)

1/30/2013 05:55 - richard h.

looks like up greenboros way has more winners than anybody i think they do have a better chanse.

1/29/2013 02:14 - NC Lottery

@ HARLEY69 - Players in big cities don't have a better chance of winning than anybody else, there are just more of them taking a chance to win. If you look at all our blog entries, not only will you see winners from all different kinds of places, you will actually see other Lucke Zone members saying that they think only players from small towns win. The fact is it takes a lot of luck to win no matter where you live or play. best of luck!

1/29/2013 10:01 - Christy A.

It seem odd that all the winners for the drawings are from Charotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Wilmington, Rocky Mount etc. You never here of a little area winning big on these drawings. I don't understand ow it is always these same places.

1/29/2013 10:00 - NC Lottery

@ DEEP1 - Here are some prize totals through 6/30/12 for you to consider... Guilford: $235.9 million .. Mecklenburg: $275.4 million .. Wake: $346.8 million .. So, while highly populated urban areas have their share of winners, about 75% of North Carolinians live in counties other than Guilford, Mecklenburg, and Wake.. which is why you see lucky winners from all kinds of places, big and small.

@ KBO80 - Thanks for your comment! We love meeting people who've won big and sharing their stories

1/29/2013 09:48 - NC Lottery

@ IEGENDWO - Any three-digit combination could be randomly generated for any ticket. It's the same reason that the number 5-4-8 could be drawn at random for two drawings in a row, or twice in one week, or twice in one year, or zero times in one year... its all totally random. Whatever your #'s are, best of luck!!!

1/28/2013 08:14 - Franz S.

I just today bought 10 PICK3 QP Tickets and guess what? Two of the tickets had the identical three numbers...548. How can this happen? I've had the same numbers on 10 entries before but never in the same identical sequence. Please explain as to how this can happen? Thanks a lot!!!

1/28/2013 07:25 - Michael R.

These big winners never come in an urban community. Most times predominantly Caucasian areas. Something fishy about that.

1/28/2013 04:59 - Karena B.

I love reading about people winning the lottery. It really touches me when people win big especially with the way the economy is. I hope people that are in need are striking it big. If not, then good luck in the near future.

1/28/2013 04:09 - NC Lottery

@ YIYI44 - Players in Gastonia have the same chance to win as players anywhere else. Best of luck!

Why not gastonia ,everything is NC
