Players win more than $22.1 million in prizes this week

This week ended with a bang as a $1 million Powerball winner and a big Cash 5 winner came by on Thursday and Friday, which helped boost the amount paid out to lottery winners this week to more than $22.1 million.

The biggest winner this week was Kenneth Florence of Greensboro, who matched all five white balls in Wednesday's Powerball drawing, winning a $1 million prize. “When I saw I had won, I felt so much relief that I could take care of the things I need to take care of,” Florence said as he collected his winnings on Thursday.

Dorothy Bundy of Jacksonville plans to tackler her "bucket list" after winning Thursday night's $855,949 Cash 5 jackpot. She plans to go to Disney World, go whitewater rafting and take a cruise to the Bahamas. “Those are things I’ve always wanted to do,” Bundy said. “This money will help me do what I want to do and what I need to do. And it gives me security. I already feel more relaxed.”

A woman from Cleveland in Rowan County plans to pay bills and save for the future after winning $200,000 playing 20X The Cash. “I was sitting there at my kitchen table and I kept looking at the ticket,” Deborah Dickerson said as she collected her winnings.

The first week of sales led to seven players winning $10,000 in the $120 Million Cash game. Winners included Richard Brucker of Lowell,John Butcher of Harmony, Gene Campbell of North Wilkesboro, Frank Gin of Fayetteville, Loren Henderson of Raleigh, Nathaniel Myers of Rocky Mount and Justin Norman of Lawndale.

Herman Gilmore of Fayetteville won $10,000 playing 20X The Cash.
Mitchell Johnson of Stanley won $10,000 playing $5,000 a Week for Life!
Jorge Munoz of Garner won $10,000 playing Jumbo Bucks.
Sami Qasem of Roanoke Rapids won $10,000 playing Black Onyx 7’s.
Bryana Stacey of Manteo won $10,000 playing 50X The Cash.

@ DREYES - The part you're missing is that when a lottery prize goes unclaimed, half of it goes back into the prize pool for players to have the chance to win in future games, and the other half benefits education. The lottery isn't a for-profit business; what we don't pay out in prizes, or to retailers for selling tickets, or to operate the games, all benefits education in all 100 counties of the state.

NCEL here it is again another cash 5 bonus buck drawing with prizes unclaimed. Just like my other post awhile back with yet another 5k unclaimed, along with other prizes too. Why not offer smaller prizes to more folks. $285,000 in cash yet $63,000 unclaimed cash your ahead of the game in profits. No pay outs allows more drawings break down those prizes really, but hey who can blame you guys is extra cash for your piggy bank! Wow!!!

@ TBONE64 - Sorry to hear you didn't have better luck on those particular tickets. There are millions of tickets for every lottery game, and as you know most tickets are not winning tickets. In terms of statistics, the overall odds of winning are not likely play out exactly with a relatively small sample size... and the number of winning and non-winning tickets out there changes each day as players buy tickets. Sometimes a player will get more than one winning ticket in a row. The odds are absolutely accurate for each lottery game when it begins, you just have to remember that the odds are for the entire game, not a particular roll.

i have seen all kinds of post about the odds of winning on a scratch card the new 20 dollar ticket says the overall odds are somewhere close to 1 in 2.90 then help me wrap my head around this on 4 different days at all different stores i have bought 8 tickets at one store one 20 dollar prize next day 10 tickets not one winner next day 8 tickets 1 25 dollar winner fourth day 9 tickets one winner 20 dollars the way i see it either i am very unlucky or the odds are way off 35 tickets only 3 winners. i know it is all chance and luck just seems odd that many tickets and so few winners really hard to understand

I am curious how Lucke drawings are done. Obviously, all the big draw games are aired on TV. For any of the 2nd chance or Lucke promotional drawings, why are they not able to be publicly viewed? Are they done in Raleigh? Who is present and how is it documented? I realize it may be cost prohibitive to air those drawings, but it would still be fun to watch, even if it was only aired through the lucke zone website.

@ southport We actually had more instant wins than those five. Perhaps the blog wasn't clear. Of the $22 million in prizes, we paid out $15 million in instant games. In addition to the five wins at the end of the blog, we reported seven players won $10,000 each on the new $120 Million Cash game and we had a $200,000 win in the 20X The Cash game. The blog also didn't list a $100,000 win in the $4,000,000 Gold Bullion game. Best of luck to you and everyone in getting wins like that this week.

@ Cathy. No. There is no period when we don't send out winning tickets. Our procedures are set up so that the printing of the instant tickets and the distribution of those tickets across the state are done as randomly as possible. Last week, we paid out $15.5 million in prizes to folks playing instant games. Still, as you note in your comment, if you aren't having fun playing the lottery then it is time to take break.

Is there a period where you don't send any winning tickets out? Or perhaps send them to certain parts of the state? I have spent hundreds of dollars on scratch offs and have not won once. I buy them at different places and it's been weeks since I've had a winning ticket. Even the people where I buy the tickets say the same thing, it's not just me. I for one am not going to buy scratch offs anymore. It's a no win game.
