Bonus Jackpot, Powerball and Ruby Red 7’s players win big

Two $1 million prizes were awarded to lucky winners this week as players across the state cashed in more than $18.6 million in prizes.

A Catawba County man became the 12th North Carolina Powerball player to claim $1 million this year. Humberto Barrios of Newton beat the odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls in the Sept. 21 drawing.

The other $1 million winner scratched his way to the seven-figure prize. Auston Griggs, who lives in the small town of Waco in Cleveland County, won his million on a lucky Ruby Red 7’s ticket.

Oct. 1 was the First Tuesday of the month, and we’ve already got our first top-prize winner in one of the new games that started that day. Carrol Brown of Charlotte won $150,000 playing Bonus Jackpot. “I’m a lucky guy,” he said. “I’m happy. What a payday.”

The $50,000 winner in Wednesday’s Cash 5 Bonus Bucks drawing has already collected his prize money. Pablo Rios Maldonado is a retired construction manager from Lucama in Wilson County. He said that he plans to use his winnings to take his wife on a cruise.

Sunday’s $114,634 Cash 5 jackpot is still unclaimed. The lucky ticket was sold at Great Stops #3 on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh.

A pair of Mega Millions players collected $10,000 each this week. Walter Matier of Greensboro won in the Sept. 27 drawing and Antonio Cobham of Raleigh won in the Sept. 17 drawing.

A dozen instant scratch-off prizes of $10,000 to $50,000 were claimed this week. The winners of those prizes are:

  • Ana Jimenez Rodriguez of Lincolnton, who won $50,000 playing Money Vault
  • Sherelle Turrentine of Raleigh, who won $50,000 playing Bingo Mania
  • Peggy Barnhill of Wilmington, who won $40,000 playing Big Money
  • Gail McMillan of Kinston, who won $30,000 playing Double Match
  • Jennifer Adcock of Oxford, who won $10,000 playing 50X The Cash
  • Cindy Edwards of Pikeville, who won $10,000 playing 50X The Cash
  • Alethea Jones of Rocky Mount, who won $10,000 playing $120 Million Cash
  • Harvey McElveen of Gastonia, who won $10,000 playing $120 Million Cash
  • Floyd McShaw of Shelby, who won $10,000 playing 5X The Cash
  • Derrick Parker of Winston-Salem, who won $10,000 playing 50X The Cash
  • Brenda White Pharr of Concord, who won $10,000 playing 20X The Cash
  • Lori Williford of Oxford, who won $10,000 playing 20X The Cash

Whatever you have planned for this weekend, we hope it’s a good one. See you next time here in the Lucke-Zone.

@JoanBlondell - Could you clarify that a little bit? If you've witnessed a security issue that needs to be addressed, please let us know.

Hello I have played the lottery for 30 years never won a lot of money that's ok I know the money helps the schools and I have fun playing but I have now learn that some of the girls around here will go into the stores and ask the guys to let them look at the scratch offs and they could tell if they were winners and they were time and time again, now that makes me mad to know that this is going on no wonder you lucky to win ten just saying this needs to be checked out

@ BADDCATT326 - The new Mega Millions game changes start after the Friday, Oct. 18 drawing. You can read more details here: http://bit.ly/1enQOtB

@ REBECCA - First, how would you know which lottery winners are in a comfortable financial position and which ones are not? Secondly, good luck is a matter of random chance; lottery tickets and lottery balls have no idea who has a ticket for what game. Please remember that games of chance are a form of entertainment, not a solution to any kind of problem, big or small. We wish you the very best.

@ SHOWTIME - The payout percentage is how much of what is spent on a lottery ticket is paid back to players in prizes. In addition to paying prizes, the lottery pays retailer a commission for selling tickets, has some operating expenses, and returns its profits to the state to benefit education. This particular game pays out 76% of what it spent on it in the form of prizes.

Will yow explain "76% Prize Payout" on the new $20 scratch-off

10/09/2013 11:34 - Rebecca P.

its so nice that people who either don't need the money or people who will waste the money always wins. still homeless and still hoping.

I have been trying for years to win but for some reason it just isn't happening for me. A little win here and there, But I must keep on playing, just with less cash for my numbers that I play all the time.. I am happy for all the winners....But would be even happier than a camel, if I won PB, CASH5 cause today is HUMP DAY!!! whoopeeeee!!!

10/08/2013 05:11 - clara m.

When does the mega millions changed?

10/08/2013 04:57 - brennie l.

Can you explain "76% Prize Payout" on the new $20 scratchoff

10/08/2013 11:02 - NC Lottery

@ BUN - Lotteries have what's called a "liability limit." Basically, the lottery has a legal obligation to make sure it can pay out the prizes to winners if particular numbers hit. The number 4-4-4-4 may be a popular one right now, so if you want to play it, just get an advance play ticket and you should be good to go.

10/08/2013 11:01 - NC Lottery

@ BKEARNEY220 - Hello there :-) Just a quick reminder that, of the 9,000,000+ people who live in North Carolina, about 651 of them live in Youngsville, NC. It's not any easier or harder to win the lottery where you live than it is anyplace else. Here is a link to some info about some winners from your area: http://bit.ly/1crtUFm

10/08/2013 10:34 - Ronald C.

It would be an impossibility to rig the winners of scratch off tickets. The lottery does not print the tickets and even the printer would not know where the tickets go. This is a very strictly controlled program and would not very easily be manipulated without being noticed. So forget about the "rigging" and only play if you can afford to lose. The lottery is only a "what if" game.

10/08/2013 10:28 - Barbara K.

Could you send me a link to any Youngsville winners?

10/08/2013 10:11 - henrietta m.

I would just like to win How is it that certain numbers are Sold out. For example 4444

10/08/2013 08:55 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (POSITIVE) - The more entries you make into a drawing, the more chances you have to win, but whether you make them all at once or one at a time doesn't affect your chances of winning. Good luck to you!

10/08/2013 08:48 - NC Lottery

@ BETTER - The lottery could not operate the way that you're describing. All of our practices are reviewed and audited, and the names of winners and their hometowns are made public by law - in order to be transparent about who wins the lottery.

10/08/2013 08:46 - NC Lottery

@ TIREDOFNOPRIZEDUE - Sorry to hear you didn't have better luck on those tickets. It's important to only play games of chance with money set aside for entertainment, because the odds are always more likely that you will not win than that you will win; that's what makes it possible to have the chance to win big prizes. Best wishes to you

10/08/2013 12:28 - Mimi B.

Well since the new game came out on last tue I have bought three of the $20 tix and about ten of the new $5 ones with no wins.... I can really discourage one from playing. I know its called the lottery but I don't have moneyoto waste like that that ! Won't be buying anymorw for a while. :(

10/07/2013 10:49 - bryan h.

I think when the lottery sends these scratch offs out they know exactly where the big winners are. The lottery is definitely rigged, no doubt. I think it is also a possibility that the ppl that win the big prizes are relatives or friends of ppl that work for the nc lottery. Not saying that is 100% true , but that it is a possibility.

10/07/2013 09:05 - marriette b.

thank god somebody won in gastonia no wonder we got rain you are bless for winning because nobody else has won anything up here enjoy your winnings i mean that from the heart enjoy your winnings

10/07/2013 06:33 - emma m.

are your chances better if you submit multiple entries at one time or do them individually?

10/07/2013 03:34 - Ronald D.

Congrats to the winners. Its like a gentleman told me recently as we both purchased tickets. "Good luck, there is enough to go around for everybody!"

10/07/2013 12:18 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (MEEKSFAMILY) - Here are two separate links you can copy & paste for more details on how the rewards points are generated: http://bit.ly/13DmhmN + http://bit.ly/XysWLC

10/07/2013 12:17 - NC Lottery

@ FO-C-US - No, the lottery only withholds the required estimated state and federal taxes on lottery prizes. It would be up to a winner to talk to a tax or financial advisor to figure out whether or not he or she should set aside more or less to cover tax obligation.

10/07/2013 12:16 - Jessica M.

How are the points generated? Why is it that sometimes you will get 5 points for a ticket entry yet others times you will get 25 points? Is there a way to ensure that you are getting the most points Possible?

10/07/2013 12:10 - NC Lottery

@ JAMESWALKERJR - It's not easier to win the lottery in Charlotte or anyplace else... you have to remember that if you see that someone won the lottery in Charlotte, there are tens of thousands of other people from that area who took a chance to win, and didn't. A lucky ticket could show up anyplace big or small at any time.

10/07/2013 07:26 - Mary T.
