Jackpot players in four North Carolina regions win prizes

While many shoppers were out looking for big deals after Thanksgiving, jackpot game players in North Carolina won four big prizes over the weekend.

We’ll start on the coast where someone who played Carolina Cash 5 in Wilmington won the jackpot on Saturday night. A lucky ticket sold at the Masonboro Country Store on Masonboro Loop Road was the only one to match all five numbers to win $357,664. The winning numbers were 5-8-16-17-36.

The next day, a Cash 5 player in Charlotte beat the odds of 1 in 575,757 for a second straight drawing to win the jackpot. That lucky ticket, worth $50,000, was sold at the Highland Creek BP/Amoco on Ridge Road. The winning numbers for Sunday’s drawing were 1-5-8-19-21.

The jackpot rolled Monday night to $57,000 heading into the nightly drawing on Tuesday. It could be won by one or more tickets, or roll to a larger amount.

On Black Friday, a Mega Millions player taking aim at the big jackpot landed a nice $5,000 prize. The winning ticket, which matched four white balls and the gold Mega Ball, was sold at the Harris Teeter on Skeet Club Road in High Point. The lucky numbers in that drawing were 9-41-43-47-57.

The annuity value for Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot is estimated at $257 million, or $139.2 million if claimed as a lump sum.

Last but not least, someone Power Played their way to $40,000 in Saturday’s Powerball drawing. The ticket, which matched four white balls and the red Powerball, was sold at the Kangaroo Express on Raeford Road in Fayetteville. The winning numbers were 5-26-44-45-57.

An $81 million Powerball jackpot annuity is on the line in Wednesday’s drawing. That prize would be worth $45.5 million if won and collected in a one-time cash payment.

That means there are always many more non-winning tickets than winning tickets; that's where the prize money comes from. @ LUCKY - Let's clear something up. Sometimes an instant game has $1 million annuity prizes. In that case, a player could choose to receive $34,000 a year for 20 years... for a total after-tax value of $680,000 when a 25% federal and 7% state withholding is applied. The reason the annuity prize is worth more than the lump sum is because the principal amount - approxiately $600,000 - collects interest each year it is in the bank while the annuity is paid out over 20 years. So, if a winner wants to take the lump sum, that $600,000 amount must be taxed at the same 25% + 7% rate. The lottery and the state are not collecting a higher percentage in taxes, it just depends on which option a player wants to go with. Does that make sense?

@ YEAHBABY - The lottery can only announce winners' names after they respond to the lottery's notification and they complete the claim process. We share the info as soon as we can :-) As for geography, we have this conversation with players every day, any one entry has exactly the same chance of winning as any other entry. All just a matter of luck. Any one of the 600 or so people that live in Newton Grove have no better or worse chance of winning than any other individual player in any other place. Good luck!

merry christmas all. i have read these blogs for years and its like 90% is all complaints. lottery is rigged, my county never wins, south carolina is better. scratch off tickets only has handful of winners, etc etc. so you would think with the same complaints by so many people for so many years the lottery would come up with a little bit better system. ive entered several several tickets begged and plead to win but hell im not gonna sit here jeprodize christmas buying scratch off tickets

Hello all, yes I have won some second chances not money but stuff, Harley stuf and must and stuff, then I saw people winning big money twice in a short period of time. I got upset, living in a small county, no big winners, I fussed about it,, ncel tod me the usual,about the amount of players,etc,etc. I still play second chances although it will be.very doubtful,can win prizes, not money,,I fussed at ncel , I see I'm not the only one,I had a rude awakening a few months ago , I saw where jumbo bucks paid 750,000 in Cleveland itwad bought at a store I buy tickets at quite regularly, as a matter of fact I bought some the day the jackpot was old, just my luck I did not buy the $10.00 ticket tae day it was sold , so I say sorry ncel for being angry, and fussing at y'all. After reading all the above comments it seem that some of the players do not have enough faith that they can win at the games. I'm so glad that people's lives can change for the better through the lottery. My issue is the legality of the wording makes it legal to jack a winner of 400 grand before taxes based on the annuity or cash option. Other states don't dock a winner for so much. Million reduced to 408 gz after taxes is ridiculous!!!!!!! If you win a mill, you should get what's left after taxes from the top of the million!!! WTHello?! The lottery not really offering a million $$$$ if they don't already have it. If I buy a million $ ticket, I want all mines after taxes!!!!!!!

But I have a problem with excepting (WHY) is most of the winners for Second Chance Cash 5 drawings are always in Durham, Shelby and Charlotte, seems that's where the focus of winners are located at, and no I won't be moving to either one of those towns, lol.
