Good luck to all this holiday season

As 2013 comes to a close, we want to wish Happy Holidays to everyone in our Lucke-Zone player’s club . We know you have lots of choices for how to spend your entertainment dollars. And we appreciate that you make it possible for the lottery to award prizes and raise money for education in our state. We thank those who take the time to read the Lucke-Zone blog and share comments about lottery games and lottery winners. Your comments, both the favorable and unfavorable, help us to a better job.

Here are a few things to keep in mind during the holiday season.

Holiday Hours

Lottery offices across the state will close at 5 p.m. Monday and reopen Friday at 9 a.m. We follow the same holiday schedule as other state offices in North Carolina. All lottery drawings will be held as scheduled. Lottery offices will also be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Give Responsibly

As you finish your gift shopping, scratch-off tickets such as Holiday Cash or Holiday Gold can be great gifts or stocking stuffers. But please remember that you must be 18 years old to play so lottery tickets should not be given as gifts to minors.

Upcoming Deadlines

•    The deadline for entering Lucke-Reward points into the $25,000 Cold Cash drawing is Tuesday, Dec. 31. The drawing will be held on Jan. 8, 2014.
•    The deadline for entering non-winning MONOPOLY instant tickets into the next monthly second-chance drawing is Tuesday, Dec. 31. The second-chance drawing will be on Jan. 8, 2014.
•    The last day of the Triple the Points Lucke-Rewards promotion on holiday instant games will be Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.

@ EARL2212 - As the lottery, we don't offer specific tax advice here. But rest assured the system does not work to tax people twice. Just ask a tax expert and he or she can explain it better than we could.

if you win anything over 5k and state and federal taxes are taken out once you win will the winner have to file taxes on that amount and have it added to their income during the income tax period? would that not be double jeopardy. state and federal taken out twice in one year.how does this tax thing work.

@EARL2212 - Yes, but in the end, it's up to the winner to make sure their taxes are in order at the end of the year. Big wins can sometimes put you in a higher tax bracket. Not a bad problem to have :-)

I just started using the online lotto subscription, just wanted to know if i still get the cash five bonus entry..you know the one that prints out when you buy at least $5 in a single purchase. Not really a fan of the new online subscription yet, but I thought I would give it a try. Thanks

@ GRANDMOM - To win big prizes in the lottery, the odds are long. We do have lots of winners. You can read their stories on the homepage of the Education Lottery at www.nc-educationlottery.org/ In fiscal year 2013, we averaged $2.6 million in prizes a day. We wish more luck to you and your friends in 2014.

What does it take to win anything in the NC lottery? I do not know 1 person who ever won anything, they spend a lot of money............ but do not win anything. I am including myself.

@ DREYES - If you're referring to the Cash 5 Bonus Bucks drawings, its been very popular with players because it provides more chances to win at no extra cost. When a lottery prize in North Carolina goes unclaimed, half the money goes to education and the other half goes to future prizes for players. So while our first choice is to award prizes to winners, the Bonus Bucks drawings are always a plus for our state :-)

no there needs to be more winners in rocky mount becuase i have seen people pu 20plus on day and even numbers or scatch-offs they might break even or not yes i play but i said 2014 i was giving up or just play one number all year people here put in just as much as the rest.....

NCEL again the cash 5 drawing has come up short in prize claims. I said it before and I will say it again break the cash out to smaller amount. Just take a look at your unclaimed numbers. No wonder you keep extending the draw game, I would to if no one claimed the tickets!!! Com'on NCEL do something better please.
