Big winners and a big jackpot

Nothing like big winners and a big jackpot to spice up an already beautiful North Carolina weekend!

Three big winners showed up at lottery HQ this week:

Dianna Sills, a resident of Dunn in Harnett County, won a $1 million prize playing the Ruby Red 7's game.

“It’s like you’re in a dream,” she said. “I don’t really know how to explain it.”

Fayetteville resident Jerry Osborne said that for three weeks, the No. 13 haunted him. He said everything changed when he won the top prize in the $500 a Week for Life! game.

"When I went to the store, my hand started itching," Jerry Osborne said. "I asked for $13 worth of tickets and won on the 13th ticket I bought."

Darrin Fitch of Matthews says he plans to save for the future with his $337,126 Carolina Cash 5 prize.

“I stopped in to get a soda and asked the clerk to check my tickets for me,” he said. “When she told me I had hit the Cash 5, my heart started pounding.”

Saturday’s Powerball drawing gives players the chance to win an estimated $216 million if taken as an annuity or $132.8 million if taken as a lump sum.

Two players claimed big Powerball prizes since last Thursday. Kenneth Batkin of Morrisville won $40,000 in the March 9 drawing and the March 6 drawing yielded a $10,000 prize for Susan Higgins of Charlotte.

Pamela Maness of Statesville claimed a $30,000 Mega Millions prize from the March 5 drawing. Mega Millions players have a chance to win $12 million this weekend.

Instant winners include:

- Kelly Alexander of Huntersville won $50,000 playing Bonus Crossword
- Wanda Hancock of Elkin won $50,000 playing Junior Big Ol' Bucks
- Thomas Stoelting of Huntersville won $10,000 playing $2,500 a Week for Life!
- Shontrell Watson of Oxford won $10,000 playing $2,500 a Week for Life!

It seems the same people keep complaining about where winners are and even when given the answer it is like nothing has ever been said. Everyone one with CRS (can't remember stuff) raise their hand! These folk have no earthly concept of how the lottery works! Or they don't go back and read the replies given by LZ and other players. This has become a gripe and complain section and not a congratulatory news section. FOLKS THE NCEL HAS NNO CONTROL WHERE THE WINNERS WILL COME FROM. ONLY THE PLAYERS CAN CHOOSE THE WINNING TICKET OR NUMBER BY LUCK.

@ ROBIN - Players in Shelby have the same chance to win as players any place else. It is true that the majority of North Carolinians live in cities and towns east of Charlotte. So you would expect to see many lottery winners from east of Charlotte. But that does not mean folks in Charlotte, Shelby, or west of Charlotte have any better or worse chance of winning. Every single player has exactly the same chance of winning playing lottery games. It's all luck! Good luck!

Hi Player, Thanks for your kind reply. Yes, uncanny cause it ain't happenin' in Shelby! LOL! If you look at all the big NC winners since the beginning of the lottery (in cities both large and small), listed on the NCEL website, the bulk of them are indeed all points East of Charlotte. All one has to do is go to the website and they'll see. They posted them so it's not any kind of theory. It's a fact that they outnumber all other areas. Maybe someone can count them. Robin...that's uncanny because we who live in the Eastern part of the state keep thinking everyone WEST of I-85 has all the luck...LOL...just goes to show; it’s all a matter of good fortune and being in the right place at the right time (smile). Just imagine…a Lottery Retailer has to order a batch of tickets on the RIGHT day, at the RIGHT time to procure the RIGHT Big Winner. So obviously, if you have a bunch cash 5 entry tickets for the bucks drawing they are only good for certain drawing. For example the ones that start with the number 1 was only good for the first drawing, second drawing only the tickets that start with 2 were good and so on. I have read the rules several times and this is not mentioned. It only says you to save your tickets and you must present it to claim. So all the tickets I have that starts with 1,2,or3 will be no good for the fourth drawing? Is that right? It should have been stated in the rules more clearly if that is the case! People out there that is sitting on tickets thinking they have a shot at winning the forth or fifth drawing can't win unless you have a number that starts with 4 or 5 ? Please Clarify.

There is no response to my last post...Why? Please tell me how it is fair to keep selling tickets(especially $20.00 tickets) when there are no top prizes left? @ BADDCATT326 - When you've made similar comments before, our response has always been that folks like you who live in Carteret County have no better or worse chance of winning a prize playing the lottery than anybody else, it's just a matter of luck. If you lived in Charlotte or Raleigh it wouldn't be any easier to win.

@ MEMEMEME - Out of state players are eligible to win, but the vast majority of North Carolina education lottery players live in North Carolina, so it is to be expected that the vast majority of winners will be North Carolina residents. That said, players who live in other states, their individual entries have no better or worse chance of winning than anyone else's, its all a matter of random luck.

People that claim the lottery is rigged are only blaming something else so as to remove the blame from them self. It's an ego thing. Like a guy shooting pool and missing all the time. He will blame the table, the stick, background noise or ANYTHING other than admitting he just is not good at shooting pool. This applies to many things in life. Rob a store an when caught blame the cops for catching him. It not that he committed a crime it was some other person or things fault!

I don't think God has a hand in anybody's winning. If that were so then it means he takes the win away from all others and on specializes on one person. The one thing God gives us in this is free will. We have the free will to play or not and to choose how we play. Having said that it does not mean I do not believe in God. I completely do and am saved, but I know he does not guide the lottery to certain winners. I don't get mad at him when I don't win. This is just me and I am not pushing my beliefs on anyone or putting down their beliefs.

I wish people would stop getting on here and complaining about not winning anything. If you're spending thousands of dollars on the Lottery maybe you need to seek counseling for gambling addiction. Odds are odds and they are not in anyones favor. You have to be extremely lucky to win a top prize on any type of lottery game you play no matter how much money you're spending. I play various types of lottery games and hope to win but know that odds are I will NOT. And stop asking why all the big winners are in big cities/towns...common sense tells you if more tickets are sold in a particular area they and more likely going to have more frequent winners.

Well..it seems that each comment that I have submitted pertaining to winning ticket region or location seems to be judged unworthy of being posted! I had an idea of having regional drawings for the Cash 5 bonus entries, filtering retailer numbers by zones, thus enabling better odds for players across the state. But, I guess that would call for a little more code writing...and money!!

I live in Davidson County and tickets and quick picks at these retail here are awful. I have been alot of places in the Davidson County area and its dry here, so others don't have to feel bad, I can purchase 10 to 20 dollars in scratch offs and nothing. This money landing in larger areas and small unknown counties to me. NC lottery is frustrating.

That is awesome and congrats! But, I have a question for the NC Education Lottery I've wanted to ask for many years. Can someone explain "WHY" the "largest majority" of winning tickets for both instant games, as well as the drawings for Cash 5, Mega Millions, Powerball tickets, etc., appear to be designated to, and for the Eastern part of our state? The numbers of winning tickets in these areas on your site confirm this to be true. It has been this way since our lottery's inception. The percentage of winning tickets all points east of Charlotte, are astounding! Western NC ticket buyers are not getting a fair shake and we never have! What's the explaination for that? For this reason, I know so many people that have stopped buying tickets altogether. I'm about to be one of them, as I've spent many, many thousands over all these years, as have many in Western NC, and never won anything over a buck or two here and there! Makes no sense why WNC & the foothills don't get more winning tickets!Sad!

Here it is Friday March 15- 8:30 pm. There was SUPPOSE to be drawing for the Wednesday $2500 on last Wed. March 13th. I keep checking but nothing shows up as to who won. Why does it take so long Am I doing something wrong? I had many entries.still waiting......
