Whiteville grocery manager wins $10,000 scratch-off prize

Edward Ward Jr., a grocery manager from Whiteville, said he was “really excited” when he scratched off a $10,000 prize playing Hot Streak. He plans to pay bills and buy a new cell phone with the winnings from his lucky $5 ticket, which he purchased at Hill’s Food Store on Sam Pott’s Highway in Lake Waccamaw.

Whiteville is no stranger to big lottery wins. Four other Whiteville residents have won between $5,000 and $100,000 playing instant scratch-off games. The biggest win in Whiteville history came in 2008 when a Powerball player matched all five white balls and won $2 million on a Power Play ticket.

Just watched the video on the drawing process! I'm really happy that y'all show us that. I see now all the time and security that takes place at each drawing. I don't see how anyone thinks that the NC lottery is doing any wrong. Really amazing what has to take place, each and every drawing. I hope this will ease all the lottery players mind now!

i wrote a blog last week that was never answered. I asked if all the numbers were in the chest and does each ball weigh the same thing. You just see the balls roll out and not what was blown up and rolls out from that puff of air/why not?

@ BIGRHINO - During the secure printing process, winning tickets are distributed at random throughout the entire printing run of each game. Then they're divided up into packs and the inventory is stored securely before being distributed to retailers by the lottery's sales staff. Where a winning ticket might show up is a complete mystery until a lucky player scratches one off! :-D

@ VINNY - An auditor who does not work for the lottery is present for every drawing, and participates in the process of randomly selecting ball sets and draw machines before each and every drawing. Twelve times a year, NCEL security provides ball sets to the the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Services - Standards Lab Division for testing.

I am not biased, but who does distribute that tickets? Is it done by an outside agency? Not trying to start and conspiracy theory, just generally interested in the process! Congrats to this guy!

@ SALLYMAE3 - There is no county where players have an advantage or disadvantage playing the lottery. The odds just play out more often in places where there are more people living and playing. But no individual person, store, county, or region has a better or worse chance of winning a prize playing games of chance :-)

It seems that the largest percentage of the really big winners are usually in certain counties. Disperse some of those top winning scratch offs all over.

@ MIMI45 - You make a similar comment to this on most blogs that we post - have you ever seen our response? Gastonia players have exactly the same chance to win as players anywhere else. There is no place in North Carolina where any individual player has an advantage or disadvantage playing games of chance from the lottery.
