Two Powerball tickets win $1 million as jackpot surges

Two Powerball tickets sold in North Carolina were one red Power Ball away from hitting the jackpot on Saturday night. Because no ticket matched all six numbers, Wednesday’s jackpot stands as the third-largest in the history of the game with an annuity value estimated at $360 million ($229.2 million cash).

The lucky $1-million winning tickets beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls. They were sold at Ingles Market #62 on Leicester Highway in Asheville and Sheetz #411 on N.C. 150 North in Winston-Salem.

Two more tickets beat odds of 1 in 648,976 to match four white balls and the Powerball making them worth $10,000 each. They were sold at Sam’s Mart #7 on Beatties Ford Road in Charlotte and Lowe's Foods #199 on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington.

The winning numbers for the drawing were 6-13-19-23-43 for the white balls and 16 for the red Power Ball. Winning ticketholders have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim prizes.

The Powerball jackpot hasn’t been this big since November. When a $327 million jackpot was not hit in the Nov. 24 drawing, it rolled to the largest amount ever for the game. That $587.5 million jackpot, for the Nov. 28 drawing, was split by tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri.

Since Powerball started here in 2006, three North Carolina players have won the jackpot. Jackie Alston of Halifax won $74.5 million in November 2006, Jeff Wilson of Kings Mountain won $88.1 million in June 2009 and Frank Griffin of Asheville won $141.4 million in February 2010.

We will be watching with all our North Carolina players on Wednesday night to see if our state makes history again. Good luck to everyone!

We have been caregivers for my elderly parents for over 5 years now. My dad has passed away but we still care for mom. During this time, we have lost our house and are now living in a much smaller home that we can barely fit in. I would love to buy or build a bigger home and have the space to give mom all the room she needed to be comfortable with all the handicap stuff she needs for the bath and a ramp, etc. First priority on my list if God should ever see fit to bless me with the money.

I would give some to friends and family and to the church to do the Lords work. I would also help the truly homeless who are trying, but just cannot get ahead. Create some jobs locally to help those who cannot find a job.

I want to put Asheville, NC back on the map for the twenty-two year old who hit one of the largest Powerball Jackpots in history. Last year losing everything me and my family were homeless for five months living out of motels and trying to find the next meal. It broke me down opened my eyes and I became so much more wise about life. So I understand what its like to struggle and not have anything. The first thing I would do with my winnings is treat myself along with my family to all the material items we have always dreamed of along with a vacation to California (always wanted to go there). I would give back to my community for all the years they have helped my struggling single mother of four out. I would investing in real estate, buying homes but then giving them to family's who are struggling like I once was along with vehicles & college funds for their children. If I won, I would open a vet office for the poor. So many animals need help, but owners can't afford the crazy prices that a normal vet charges. The prices would be what they could afford to pay. If they have nothing, then they pay nothing. I love my pet.

There are kids in this state that go to the office every Friday and have their little book bags filled with food so that they can eat over the weekend. There are families living out of their cars. These are the people I want to help. Not in some foreign country. We have famine and devastation right out of our backdoor. @ PLAYER (E) - We've heard that suggestion before, but changing the way Powerball works isn't just up to the North Carolina lottery, since the game is played in 42 states, Washington DC, and the US Virgin Islands. Why don't you take an informal survey of other lottery players you know and see if they would still be interested to buy a Powerball ticket if the odds of hitting the jackpot were still 1 in 175 million, but the $40 million starting jackpot would have to be split 10 ways. Well I would do just like anyone else....pay off ALL my bills. Then I would take a vacation for a week with my family and make a plan with all of my winnings that the universe has emitted back to me.
