"Wow. This ain't a bad day at all." That's what $1 million winner Ronnie Jackson of High Point had to say at lottery headquarters. The retired Army soldier was one of two players to scratch off seven-figure prizes this week. He purchased his winning 20X the Money ticket at The Pop Shoppe on Hickswood Road in High Point.

The other $1 million winner is Rudolph Peterson, a production operator from Halifax. “Of all the stores in North Carolina, I was in the right place at the right time,” the North Carolina native said. “I’m still just shocked.” He scratched off the lucky ticket at the store he purchased it from, the New Dixie Mart on N.C. 903 in Halifax.

Roland Bersch, an 83-year old dance instructor from Fayetteville, stepped his way to $150,000 playing the lottery's Mega Money Multiplier ticket. He bought the lucky ticket at Pan’s Thai Market on Hope Mills Road in Fayetteville. “I thought I had read it wrong,” Bersch said. “I asked the lady at the store and she looked at it and told me I had won. I didn’t think it could be, but I am just elated.”

A pair of Carolina Cash 5 jackpots were won this week by players who bought their tickets in Raleigh. The $72,337 jackpot for the July 13 drawing was won by a ticket sold at Taz's on South Wilmington Street. The $183,385 jackpot for the July 18 drawing was won by a ticket sold at El Mandado Supermercados on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh.

Five prizes of $10,000 were won or claimed by players of multistate jackpot games. Maryellen Bickel of Louisburg won in the July 2 Mega Millions drawing. David Halverson of Anthony Florida bought his winning ticket for the July 6 Powerball drawing at the Kangaroo Express on Ashdale Court in Kannapolis. Three tickets in the July 16 Mega Millions drawing won $10,000, one of which was claimed by Timothy Mabe of King. The other tickets were sold at Charlie's Tobacco Outlet on Eastchester Drive in High Point and at Tobacco Plus on Eagle Street in Asheville.

Eight more players scratched their way to big wins this week. They are:

  • Terry Yarboro of Elkin, who won $10,000 playing Black Onyx 7's
  • Lori Rhodes of Carrboro, who won $10,000 playing MONOPOLY
  • Adam Ramey of Kernersville, who won $10,000 playing $200,000 Extreme Cash
  • Patricia Nelson of Greensboro, who won $10,000 playing MONOPOLY
  • Cynthia Hovis of Lincolnton, who won $10,000 playing Mega Money Multiplier
  • Sharon Goodson of Gastonia, who won $10,000 playing $5,000 a Week for Life!
  • Tara Foland of Asheboro, who won $25,000 playing Cherry Twist
  • Troy Foy of Richlands, who won $50,000 playing Bingo Mania

In all, instant winners claimed $15.1 million in prizes. Along with the $3.4 million won by draw game players, N.C. Education Lottery winners scored more than $18.6 million this week.

That's it for the wrap-up. Thanks for playing and reading - and good luck!

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - We're not going to publish your posts that contain political grandstanding or that are insulting to other lottery players. You should find a different place on the internet to air your thoughts on those topics.

@ YEAHBABY - The way the lottery notifies winners for Lucke-Rewards & second-chance drawings is first by e-mail. If we don't reach a winner that way, we try by telephone - 919 area code! ;-) Good luck!!

@ T-BONE - That is a very original concept! We will pass the idea along :-)

Itd quiet down the naysayers..show the ethical side of NCEL..not to mention be AWESOME P.R.!! "Lets Do It!!"...thanx! :D

7/25/2013 06:29 - Wanda M.

Just curious on what number to expect to see when I get a call telling me "I won ?" I hope NCEL does not use a 800,877,866, type of number. I much rather get an email anyway, so all my info is updated.

7/25/2013 01:21 - Tamiko R.

Thanks NCEL for the feedback on the extended play scratch-offs (smile). Hopefully there will be some available before October...just found out we're moving out of state...again. Sigh, the life of the military.

@ PLAYER (RODMATH) - We know that there are players like you out there who enjoy what we call 'extended play' scratch-off games. We will surely do our best to continue offering a range of games including extended play tickets! Thanks for the feedback

Does anyone ever win big in southport,nc ...just wondering, I know it's not me and I play at least twice a week? pb,mm,c5 and scratch offs.

7/24/2013 10:01 - Colleen H.

How many total entries for today's drawing? Thank you sh

7/24/2013 08:25 - Monte W.

ALL you folks complaining about not having winners in your area,, THAT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE NCEL! They do not try to match YOUR numbers,, YOU HAVE TO MATCH THEIR NUMBERS. So if there are no winners near you it means no one near you PICKED the numbers needed to win!! When you buy any of the pick # thru Powerball, you are predicting the numbers that will be drawn for that game!!!

7/24/2013 08:07 - Jennifer I.

Come on Cherryville,,,, big money, big money, big money!!!! Momma needs a wind sheild! :) Congrats to the winners, may God Bless you with wise decisions!

7/24/2013 07:00 - Colleen H.

Btw player services did contact me and I took my winning tickets to store to cash. Dummy me. I didn't know about double $$ signs meaning 2 times and 4 times prize amounts. Yay! I only asked because one store didn't know how to check prize amount without a payout so I went to another store and they told me what double $$ signs meant. Had I had a magnifying glass I guess I could have read it myself!! ;-). Thanks sh

7/24/2013 05:48 - Tamiko R.

I LOVE playing the $100,000 Crossword game. I figure if a piece of paper is going to cost $5, I want the thrill of winning to last for a little bit...lol. Are there any plans on creating more substantial games like this e.g. treasure hunt games, poker, seek and find? Some people like the quick-fix games but I and others like to take our time scratching. Would love to see longer games submitted since there is only one grand prize left on the Crossword. Thanks for listening (smile).

7/23/2013 08:06 - arkeata b.

I am from Halifax County and I am so glad that Peterson won because we don't have many winners in Halifax that win. I also heard that he will continue on working as well. This sounds like a gentleman that's not wild about money and haven't forgotten what he came from. All I can say it couldn't have happened to a better person. Congratulations young man! Enjoy your installments! Maybe I will hit something soon. I will wait my turn!!!!!!!

7/23/2013 04:56 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (CSUMMERS76) - The number that comes back when you submit your points for entries is what's called an "order ID" - it is just a record of one transaction, X # of points for Y # of entries. If a drawing takes 10 points to enter and you use 50 points to enter 5 times, you get one "order ID" and five entries in the drawing - you can check the LUCKE REWARDS - WINNERS page to see how many entries you have in a particular drawing. Good luck!

7/23/2013 04:49 - NC Lottery

@ HEELS79 - Retailers have the option of cashing out prizes up to $599, but the lottery can only encourage retailers to do this; stores have their own operating policies and some do not have enough cash on hand to do it. A grocery store that sells lottery is often a good option. Give our player customer serivce # a call if you have more questions: 877-962-7529

7/23/2013 04:17 - Nina Carol S.

I thought if you buy a lottery ticket you and it wins you could collect your money at that store..we have very few..I mean very few that will let you collect ..they will tell you they don't have it...without even looking..small amounts they will

7/23/2013 03:49 - CHRISTINA S.

The top prize for pick 3 and 4 usually never change. In Pennsylvania, if you play a pick 3 straight for $1, the payout is $500; boxed for $1 it's $80. It's been that way for years. These payouts are set no matter how much their sales increase.

7/23/2013 03:45 - CHRISTINA S.

Ok...The original answer to my question was not clear. The response was "@ PLAYER (CSUMMERS76) - No, if you make five entries into a drawing, you will get five entry numbers"....So now are you saying if I make 5 entries at once, I receive ONE entry number, and still have 5 chances to win???? What criteria would they use to pick one of my five entries if I only get ONE entry number?

7/23/2013 12:49 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - We have done our best to explain several times that, as sales increase, the total amount of prizes paid out increases. We are not going to go back and forth about this forever - if you enjoy playing games of chance, we wish you luck.

7/23/2013 12:41 - josh p.

why hasn't the top prize for pick 3 and 4 changed? your sales has increased every year. explain how thats fair. and all these fake post. who do you think ur fooling

7/23/2013 12:33 - josh p.

i'm sayn me. not everybody else. the most $1 exact wins is $500. thats the most you can win on one ticket. which is the same as day one. yet since day one your sales have gone up right much. but you have yet to increase how much one ticket can win. thats not fair

7/23/2013 11:21 - NC Lottery

@ DEEP1 - The NCEL has already advocated for and did receive greater flexibility to increase payouts. All state lotteries have to find a balance that works for players and the beneficiary cause that they serve. If you would like to see the law changed, feel free to contact your elected lawmakers.

7/23/2013 10:43 - Michael R.

Well I think the NC Lottery Board of Directors and State Legislature to create more flexibility so there can be a bigger percentage of payout. In the end, they are going to end up losing lottery players and revenue because of greed. I'm in the public, and I see and hear people talk about how screwed up the NC lottery is. People along the NC/Va line rebel and go over to Va and play.

7/23/2013 10:23 - NC Lottery

@ LOBSTERSBABE - Hey, congrats on your good luck!!! :-)

7/23/2013 10:21 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - Your math is all over the place. The top prize values for Pick 3 and Pick 4 have not changed, but prizes are always paid out in proportion to the number of winners. Another way of saying that is, as the number of people who play Pick 3 and Pick 4 on a regular basis increases, the volume of prizes paid out to winners increases. In one of our many responses to one of your many questions/accusations, we gave you information about how you can submit a formal records request if you would like our finance department to put together sales information for you about a specific time frame.

7/23/2013 10:08 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (CSUMMERS76) - Sounds like we're talking about two different things. You may receive one number that confirms you've entered, but if you choose to make five entries at once, but what we were expressing is that you would have five separate chances to win in the random drawing itself.

7/23/2013 10:04 - NC Lottery

@ DEEP1 - For more information, please refer to our response on 7/21/2013 at 05:30 p.m. where we explain that state lotteries operate under different legal and historical circumstances.

7/23/2013 09:53 - Michael R.

'other states pay out more. And why do some of these post up here or on other parts of the blog seem fake. i'm i the only one who's feeling this way '...... Player I agree with you 100%. I live near the Va Border and they pay out a lot more in their pick 3 and pick 4 and Va has about 1 million less people than NC. I still dont know the reason for the discrepancy, but it leaves a question mark.

7/23/2013 08:46 - thomas m.

have won a few $

7/23/2013 08:14 - CHRISTINA S.

Lucke-zone...I don't believe that is accurate. If I choose the Wednesday drawing, and in the "Quantity of Entries" box enter 5, they system only gives you ONE entry number, not 5. I typically enter them individually, and not use the "Quantity" option. It used up 50 points and gave me ONE entry number!

7/23/2013 05:04 - josh p.

so since the first year how much overall have your sales increased. its increased every single year which is what 7 yrs now. maybe it was two yrs ago when it went up almost 10%. So say its increased 6%on average that means in 7 yrs thats a 42% increase since your first year..yet the pick 3 and pick 4 are the same. seems very unfair if you ask me and many others.

7/22/2013 11:55 - mary m.

Hey everyone , I won 5 thousand first of july and I never thought i would ever win anything ! I have never won anything before in my life and I work at a local grocery store , dont get frustrated u never know when it will happen! Im just a poor counrty girl like everyone else and I made it happen ! Good luck and pray !

7/22/2013 11:20 - jeff p.

Although it can be a pain to enter all of my non winning numbers, the automatic entry into all of the drawings is great and i hope to see more like the extra summer cash drawings..thanks

7/22/2013 09:26 - eugene t.

STILL SCRATCHING AWAY OFTEN, NO BIG WINNER-YET!BEST OF LUCK EVERYONE.

7/22/2013 08:40 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (CSUMMERS76) - No, if you make five entries into a drawing, you will get five entry numbers, because the random drawing selects from the total number of entries made :-) Each entry made in a drawing must have an absolutely equal chance of winning in order to be legal and fair to everyone.

7/22/2013 07:47 - CHRISTINA S.

If you enter the Wednesday drawing and select a quantity of "5" entries, you only get assigned one entry number. Is that one entry number linked to five separate entries? Just wondering how that works. Thanks!

7/22/2013 05:10 - josh p.

Increase the pick 3 payout by 10% per winning ticket and i'll start back playn. 1 doller exact would win 550. 1 doller any would win 90. AND i would spend atleast $5 a day on your game

7/22/2013 04:54 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - The lottery's sales were up about 5.8% for the last fiscal year, and more prizes were paid out, in proportion with that increase. We do our best to offer a variety of games that people like. We're sorry to hear that you aren't satisfied with the prizes that can be won playing Pick 3.

7/22/2013 04:39 - josh p.

Well the facts are your sales have increased every year. almost 10% kast year alone. so quit sayn your increasing prizes when you haven't done nothing with pick 3, which is a very popular game..as for me until you raise the payout on the pick 3 you won't get another 50 cent outta me. which you haven't since last nov. when you tool green ball away. i wont buy a scratch off or nothing until you raise pick 3 exact hit payout

7/22/2013 04:12 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (SUEHUSKINS) - We have forwarded your questions to the customer service team that answers questions on the 1-800 line as well as sometimes by e-mail. You may receive an e-mail from playerinfo@lotterync.net with a reply to your questions.

7/22/2013 04:10 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (REDCHEVY) - Our best guess is that you have left a comment similar to this more than ten times on ten different blogs. In our responses, we have repeatedly posted a link to info about winners in the Hillsborough and Orange County area. Please understand that nobody "puts" winning or non-winning tickets in any particular place. It's random chance. Players where you live have no better or worse chance of winning a prize; there are just people all across the state, in places big & small, taking a chance to win.

7/22/2013 03:51 - george w.

Hillsborough is just like Efland. You all have got to put some winning tickets around here for somebodyto hit a big one. You don't have any. They are always some where elese.

7/22/2013 03:02 - NC Lottery

@ TANYA - Of course we spend most of our time talking about lottery topics here on the Lucke-Zone blog, but we know there are much bigger and more important things. Our very best to you and your family as well.

I know the feeling I'm fighting cancer myself, I'm 24 years old, I have acute lympotic leukimia. And I have a 2yr old daughter, and they have given me a year or less too live!! I'm praying too God that I win just enough money too put up for my daughter too go too college one day and too pay for her wedding, and too help with her first child since I will not be around too help her, it would be the least I could do. So I'm crossing my fingers and saying many prayers!!!!!

7/22/2013 02:29 - Derrick H.

Well said OBXALATER, you all had a big winner a little while back. I live in Durham, NC and there have been plenty of small winners but no million dollar winners not mad, I trying to be the first big winner in my town. I travel alot so I buy tickets out of town when I can but some towns I go to have only a few lottery retailers. Here in Durham there are so many retailers, even little shops that only sell tobacco products sell lottery tickets too. Its just about being in the right place in the right time, with a little luck on your side. That said GOOD LUCK to all MAY GOD BLESS YOU!!!

7/22/2013 02:12 - Katie G.

I did see the new pick 3 front and back selection on a display. I think starting July 28th. I can't wait but it's taken me a while to get the regular pick 3 down so I hope instructions are as great as regular pick 3. ;-)

I think it is great the NCEL do the second chance lottery. Especially the hot summer chance.Choosing twenty winners three different drawing gives people hope that they might be lucky.NCEL continue doing what you do.And I hope to see more second chance lottery games with more winners.Maybe next time choose one hundred or fifty winners.Just a suggestion.Good luck to Everyone and be BLESSED.

@ MAMACATZ - We wish good luck to The Catz!!!

7/22/2013 10:48 - Ronald C.

The catz did win a couple of times this year and is still playing modestly. $100 A WEEK is too much for me but I still cash once in a while on a lot less. It's a matter of luck and timing. Last month, the lady standing behind me in the same store won $5,000 on the same game that I had just played. That was a real tearjerker!

@ DEBZ7 - Lucke-Zone members who play the lottery in North Carolina but live in another state are absolutely eligible to win a prize in Lucke-Rewards and second-chance drawings. In a random drawing, having just one valid entry gives you a chance to win - no matter where you live! :-)

please add to comment left, I also have a $10 monopoly scratch off with a single prize of $5 as well. thanks sh

7/21/2013 06:13 - Colleen H.

I don't have access to phone during player service hours and have a question. I have 2 $5,000 a week for life scratch offs @ $10 each, 2 $4,000,000 cash blowout at $20 each and 1 $4,000,000 gold buillion @$20 each. They each have a single prize of $5. I cannot find anywhere on any scratch off a prize of less than the amount charged for the ticket. Is this an error because no $5 prize is listed for any of these tickets? thanks sh

7/21/2013 06:08 - Cory H.

I've never ever won nothing and I've been playing sense 06, I spend over a hundred week sometimes because I figure the more I spend the more chance of winning but I'm beginning to think otherwise, I've never seen anybody win from Efland, NC.......HOPE to win one day.......

7/21/2013 05:32 - NC Lottery

@ LUCKY RED - We'll be sharing more info on those topics soon... if you like Sum It Up, you will like the news! Stay tuned to the Lucke-Zone for updates :-)

7/21/2013 05:30 - NC Lottery

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - Different state lotteries operate according to different circumstances. Compared to most state lotteries, for example, the NCEL is extremely young. The legal statutes that provide for state lotteries vary as well. The top prize is not the only prize that players can win playing daily draw games, and the prize structures vary by state. All of these factors contribute to the decisions that go into how to a lottery game works; our goal is to offer a variety of games with different combinations of prizes and odds that will be appealing to a variety of players.

7/21/2013 04:43 - josh p.

What i'm talking about is the pay out on a pick 3 exact hit has stayed 500 since the very first day. and you act like your giving out more prize money. In some states the payout is 600. Thats 20% more than you guys

7/21/2013 04:38 - Deanna F.

we all have the same odds.thats why I am going to keep on playing. Maybe one day Iwill be a big winner.Goog luck to everyone.

7/21/2013 04:30 - Lynn Q.

Is it true that changes for Pick 3 & Pick 4 will take place to include front 2 & back 2 the end of July? How much can you win for this? How long will you be doing the Sum-it-up for these games? I do like the Sum-it-up!

@ PLAYER (TARA13) - From what we can tell, you're one of about 300 people that lives in the small town of Mooresboro, and we can assure you that folks where you live have no better or worse chance of winning the lottery than anybody else. It's not easier to win the lottery in a big city, there are just many more people taking a chance to win there on a daily basis. With that said, we have had some lucky winners from your neck of the woods. You can copy & paste this link into your browser to see that info: http://bit.ly/15z8hw2

I like hearing about winners in my area (Fayetteville) and I buy my tickets from the same Thai market. I'm getting closer.

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - The amount of money paid out in a particular Pick 3 or Pick 4 drawing depends entirely on how many players happened to play the game for that drawing and also happened to choose the lucky winning numbers. So, if you see a really high payout total one day and a lower payout total on another day, the lottery didn't do anything differently on those two days. We just conduct random drawings and pay out prizes to the lucky winners. As for blog comments, you can tell from our responses to you that we don't censor the conversation. You should not be surprised that many people who have joined the NCEL's official players' club post a variety of comments about playing the lottery.

You talk about giving more out in prize money. how come the pick 3 and 4 are the same as the day you started them games. every year your sales have gone up yet your pay out on those games has stayed the same. and dont insult me with the green ball thing cause that was a joke to start with and you only did it for 8 weeks. other states pay out more. And why do some of these post up here or on other parts of the blog seem fake. i'm i the only one who's feeling this way

if you want to win big money find the smallest town near you if you live in a big city. it might take extra gas but 9/10 it might be worth the drive.
