Charlotte store sells $1 million-winning Powerball ticket

A lucky ticket sold in the Queen City was just one red Powerball away from hitting the jackpot on Saturday night. The ticket, sold at Circle K #5100 on Albemarle Road, beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls drawn and win $1 million.

The winning numbers for the drawing were 9-23-40-53-58 for the white balls and 6 for the red Powerball. Because no ticket matched all six numbers, the jackpot rolled to a larger amount. The estimated annuity value for the jackpot in Wednesday's drawing stands at $235 million or a one-time cash payment of $136.5 million.

Whoever purchased the lucky ticket in Charlotte has 180 days to come to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to collect the prize money.

@ BIRDBRAIN - Each individual has their own tastes and preferences.. if you were to interview thousands of Powerball players, you would probably find that they don't mind the long odds, because they enjoy playing for a large jackpot. The evidence of this is that Powerball is a very popular game. The current jackpot compels me to say that I believe you are moving backwards when you raise jackpots to these insane amounts. NO ONE should be winning this amount of money - it's not safe or healthy. If you truly made it easier to win, with lower jackpots and fewer white ball numbers, I believe you'd sell more tickets in the long run. Keep the price at 2$/$3 if you must, but reduce the jackpot and number of white ball numbers. I know far more people who don't play and never have, than those that do. If I knew someone who had actually won I'd never miss buying a ticket. When jackpots get to these insane amounts people buy tickets because they believe there will be a winner - as much or more than the jp size. You'd never run out of buyers - so many people turning 18 every day. Also, while I'm here please start publishing how many scratch off tickets have no winners. Thanks for your time!
