Coastal resident wins $10,000 playing Powerball

Valerie Mason of Ocracoke did not have one of the three Powerball tickets that split the $448.4 million jackpot in the Aug. 7 drawing. She did, however, match four white balls and the red Powerball to win $10,000.

Mason, a commercial printer, collected her winnings Monday at the lottery's regional claim center in Wilmington. There, she said that she'd use the prize money to buy equipment for her business. Mason purchased the winning ticket for $2 at the Ocracoke Station on Irvin Garrish Highway in Ocracoke.

The estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing stands at $50 million if taken as an annuity or $28.9 million if claimed as a lump sum.

I have acquired a toatal of 9,152 points I have redeemed 6,640 points, i have yet to win anything...Whats up with that???? but i still have faith in winning someday...best of luck to everyone

@ PLAYER (CSUMMERS76) - Your comment about where prizes "seem to go" is one of the most common lotteries hear about. But its a matter of logic, not unfair advantage that explains why you often seen winners from bigger places. Its not because any one player had any better chance to win. Its simply because a place where MORE PEOPLE are taking a chance to win, you are likely to see MORE winners. In fact, we've had lots of winners from your area, too. @ BARBARA - Once a lottery ticket is sold to a player, that ticket becomes his or her property, and it is up to them to take care of it and maintain possession of it. It's not against the rules for any other citizen age 18 or older to pick up a discarded lottery ticket that has been thrown in the trash.

@ SANDY - Names of winners are published only after winners respond to the lottery's efforts to notify them AND a winner completes the claim process. Prizes of $600+ must be claimed at one of the lottery's regional claim centers. As you can see, the timetable for the winners' names being announced is largely up to the winners! :-)

I am very happy that the 30 per day entry has been increased to 75 per day; although I think that it should unlimited entries and limit the points you can use per day. I say that because I don't have time to enter during the week because my work schedule and only have time on the weekend to enter my tickets. Just a suggestion. But I am grateful for the increase.

THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT WORK IN THE STORES THAT SALE THESE LOTTERY TICKETS. they take the non-winning tickets out of the trash can and play them in the Lucky-rewards second chance drawing for FREE. IS THAT LEGAL? congrads to VALERIE !!!

I haven't see ANY winners from Troutman. The second chance prizes seem to go to the bigger cities like Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte. Hopefully, one of these days, Troutman will get on the map!

Last year I won a prize pack that included a $250 visa card. I messaged then that I bought my sons paramedic books with it. He finished the classes, passed the state exams, and is now working as a paramedic as of July 1 thanks to the help of the NC Education Lottery!

@ PLAYER (BARTIE) - No, the one-time addition of the Tundra to that Bonus Bucks drawing was thanks to Toyota & The Charlotte Motor Speedway... it's possible another promotion could be done in the future, but the standard top prize in the drawing will be $50,000 :-)
