Before we get to the rundown of this week’s biggest winners, we have to talk about this weekend’s biggest jackpot. The annuity estimate for Saturday’s Powerball drawing has been increased to $300 million. We’ll be watching with all our North Carolina players to see what happens.
It was just last weekend that a North Carolina Powerball ticket was one red Powerball away from winning the jackpot. That $1 million-winning ticket was purchased by Rickey Earnhardt of Charlotte. He discovered he won while shopping at the Circle K on Albemarle Road in Charlotte – the same store where he bought the winning ticket. “The clerk said someone in the store had won,” Earnhardt said. “I went straight home and checked my tickets. I couldn’t believe it then and I still can’t now.”
Earnhardt wasn’t the only big winner in the July 27 drawing. Kelly Breed of Greensboro won $10,000 on a ticket she purchased at the Stop & Save Citgo on Mount Hope Church Road in McLeansville in Guilford County. Four days later, Christopher Smith of Charlotte won $10,000 in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. He purchased his lucky ticket at the Kingsway on Market Street in Cramerton in Gaston County.
Another $10,000 prize claimed this week went to Mega Millions players Mattie and Vicente Gotay of Fuquay-Varina. Their lucky ticket was purchased at the Willow Springs Service Center on N.C. 42 East in Willow Spring in Wake County. Heading into Friday’s Mega Millions drawing, the jackpot is estimated at a $13 million annuity value, or one-time lump sum payment of $9 million.
We are still waiting to meet the winner of Monday’s $169,635 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot. The ticket - which was the only one to match all five numbers in the drawing - was sold at the Food Lion on Skibo Road in Fayetteville. The Cash 5 jackpot weighed in at $131,000 for Friday’s drawing and could be won or will grow larger before the nightly drawing on Saturday.
What about scratch-off players? Topping this week’s list is Alamance County resident Jeffrey Jordan of Graham. He won $75,000 playing Lady Bucks. Rhonda Lewis of Kannapolis scratched off $50,000 on a Bingo Mania Ticket. It was a lucky $4,000,000 Cash Blowout ticket that led to New Bern resident Isaac Koonce winning $20,000.
A “jumbo” $10,000 win went to a lucky player from the very small rural town of Merry Hill in Bertie County. Shakedia Williams won the prize playing Jumbo Bucks. Three other players of instant games claimed $10,000 each this week:
- Carolyn Armstrong of Roanoke, Va. won playing Black Onyx 7’s.
- Terri McCray of Greensboro “cracked the code” on a Money Vault ticket to win big.
- Buncombe County resident Lori Parham of Leicester won playing 10X the Payout.
We’d like to share a couple reminders with players as we begin the month of August. First, with football season right around the corner, make sure to check out our blog about the unique Tailgate Package Drawing. For players who would rather use Lucke-Rewards points to enter for the chance to win cash instead of merchandise in August, the weekly Winning Wednesdays drawings are another option. The second reminder is that a new suite of multiplier-themed games start Tuesday. Be on the lookout for 5X, 10X, 20X and 50X the Cash tickets in a store near you.
Everyone have a great weekend and see you next time here in the Lucke-Zone.

Good luck to me tonight!
Congrats to all the winners. I am happy for everyone that have won and I am waiting for my winning numbers so I can pay off home and pay off my bills and i want to help others, ie my church, my family, and my chosen select few friends.
