“Disbelief” and “shock” are the words that Stephen Wood of Walkertown used to describe the moment he realized he’d won the $50,000 prize in the Oct. 16 Carolina Cash 5 Bonus Bucks drawing. If not for a slip of his fingers on his phone, Wood’s winning entry might still be crumpled up in his glove compartment.
Wood, who works for a plastics manufacturer, was checking the winning Cash 5 numbers on his smartphone on Monday. When he accidentally pressed the “Bonus Bucks” link on the lottery’s homepage, a familiar store name caught his eye.
“I looked at the store address where the ticket was sold and thought ‘Hey that’s where I buy tickets’,” Wood said. “I went to my car and started digging in the glove box and there it was, all crumpled up. I probably would have thrown it away. I showed my co-workers and we all just started hollering.”
Wood said that he plans to use his winnings to pay bills and buy a storage building to put in his backyard. He received the winning entry after making a Cash 5 purchase at the Quality Mart on Baux Mountain Road in Winston-Salem.
“I like playing Cash 5 because it’s just for North Carolina,” Wood said as he collected his winnings with his wife. “I got lucky this time and it feels great.”
The Bonus Bucks promotion is part of the lottery Cash 5 game, which has nightly drawings for a jackpot that starts at $50,000. To get a free entry into a Bonus Bucks drawing, buy $5 in Cash 5 tickets in one of the two following ways:
• Select five sets of numbers for one drawing on a single ticket purchase
• Choose one set of numbers for five drawings on a single ticket purchase
When you do this, an entry slip will be automatically generated along with your separate $5 Carolina Cash 5 ticket. Make sure to get your Cash 5 ticket and your entry slip at the time of purchase – and keep them both. After all, both could make you a winner. Each Bonus Bucks drawing has one prize of $50,000, one prize of $5,000, and three prizes of $1,000 to be won.
Bonus Bucks entry slips issued after Oct. 16 are valid for the next drawing on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
